BIRTH: Braintree vital recs, "Earliest Records of Boston," NEHGR, 12(1858):107 (FHL #974 B2ne). A birth date for Samuel Penniman on 1 Nov 1655 is found in Samuel A. Bates, ed, RECORDS OF THE TOWN OF BRAINTREE, 1640-1793 (Randolph, MA, 1886), 632 (FHL #974.47/B3 N2b). In light of Samuel's marriage date, the latter birth date seems less likely.
MAR: DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 21st Report Boston Record Commissioners (Boston, 1890), 23 (FHL #974.46/D1 V2r). The marriage is also recorded in Bates, RECORDS OF THE TOWN OF BRAINTREE, 718.
DEATH: Bates, RECORDS OF THE TOWN OF BRAINTREE, 695. Also see the adm of estate of Samuel Penniman of Braintree, 2 Feb 1704/5, Suffolk Co. Probate, #2911, (o.s.) 15:378-79 (FHL #584132).

MAR: VITAL RECORDS OF TAUNTON, 3 vols. (Boston, 1928-29), 2:216 (FHL #974.485/T1 V2n). She is called Hannah Hall in her mother's will.

BIRTH: Braintree vital recs, "Earliest Records of Boston," NEHGR, 12(1858):107 (FHL #974 B2ne). Birth is also recorded in Samuel A. Bates, ed, RECORDS OF THE TOWN OF BRAINTREE, 1640-1793 (Randolph, MA, 1886), 632 (FHL #974.47/B3 N2b).
MAR: Abigail is called Abigail "Carie" in the will of her mother, Lydia Wight, 22 Dec 1673, proved 27 Jul 1676, Suffolk Co. Probate, #816, (o.s.) 6:160 (FHL #584128). She is no doubt the "aged" widow Abigail Cary of Bristol, whose will, 7 May 1722, proved 12 Feb 1729/30 mentions "my husband Deacon John Cary deceased" (Bristol Co., Mass. Probate Records, 6:353-55 [FHL #461883]). Abigail's age of 79 yrs on the gravestone inscription at Bristol, below, is also a good match for the age of Abigail Penniman, who was born in 1651. John Cary and Increase Robinson (another brother-in-law) were among the commissioners who divided the estate of Lt. John Hall of Taunton, 29 Dec 1694 (Bristol Co. Probate, 2:66-67 [FHL #461882]). Also see the deed from John Cary of Bristol to the heirs of "my Brother in law Increase Robinson, deceased," 25 May 1704 (Bristol Co. Deeds [Taunton Registry], 4:283 [FHL #465798]). The land was in the town of Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Mass. Increase Robinson was the husband of Abigail's sister Sarah, while John Hall married Abigail's sister Hannah. Hence, it is believed that Abigail Penniman married John Cary of Bridgewater. The mar of John Cary, Jr, and (----), 7 Dec 1670, is recorded in VITAL RECORDS OF BRIDGEWATER (Boston, 1916), 2:75 (FHL #974.482/B2 V2v). A private record, written many years later, calls the wife Abigail "Allen." However, in light of the above evidence, this identification seems incorrect. The mar of Abigail Penniman and Samuel Neal on 18 Apr 1678 is recorded in Bates, RECORDS OF THE TOWN OF BRAINTREE, 719. The original entry, however, shows that she was actually Abigail "Benjamin."
DEATH: Date of death is from gravestone inscription, below. Also see the will of Abigail Cary of Bristol, RI, above.

MAR: No mar rec found. Sarah, John, Thomas, and Mehitable Meakins, all proved children of Thomas and Mary Meakins of Hatfield, are called grandchildren in the will of Sarah Bunce of Hartford, 19 Aug 1689, no probate act (died 1693), Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:416 (FHL #974.6 P2m). For children of Thomas and Mary Meakins, see "Births, Marriages, and Deaths, [Hampshire] County Court," entries for Hatfield, 105, and Hadley, 70 (FHL #760648).
DEATH: "A List of the men slain in the County of Hampshire,"Massachusetts Archives, 68:33, photocopy of original document in Winifred L. Holman, "The Meakins Lineage" (typescript, 1958-60; NEHGS, Boston), 16a. An account of Thomas Meakins' death at the hands of the Indians during King Philip's War is found in Daniel White Wells and Reuben Field Wells, A HISTORY OF HATFIELD (Springfield, MA, 1910), 79-80 (FHL #974.423/H2 H2w). It is incorrectly stated that Thomas's death occurred in Sep 1677 in "Births, Marriages, and Deaths [Hampshire] County Court," entries for Hatfield, p. 110 (FHL #760648). This date is disproved by the adm/inv of estate of Thomas Meakins, Jr, [of Hatfield], 29 Mar 1676; also see settlement of estate 30 Mar 1680, distribution 3 Nov 1693. (Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:165, 206; 3:15 [FHL #879184]).
