MAR #1: Coventry town and vital recs, 1:159 (FHL #003861). Mar entry is torn, erradicating the year of mar or Abigail's surname. The mar year is suggested by the birth of 1st child, Ann, in 1745. Abigail is identified in the will of her father, Joseph Baker of Tolland, Conn., n.d., proved 20 Feb 1754, Hartford District Probate, 17:36-37 (FHL #004555).

DEATH: MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS IN THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION, 17 vols. (Boston, 1896-1908), 6:418 (FHL #974.4 M23m). Samuel was "reported deceased" on muster roll of Capt. John Lamont's Co., Col. Gamaliel Bradford's Regt., enlisted 1 May 1777, but appears on a return as late as 10 May 1778. He was perhaps the Samuel Gilbert who died 6 Aug 1778 in Lt. Ephraim Minot's corps of invalids stationed at Boston (MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS, 6:419).
OCC: Revolutionary War soldier.
NOTE: That Samuel Gilbert of Colchester, Conn. is identical to Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable, Mass. is shown by a Sharon, Vermont deed in which Daniel Gilbert gave land to Elisha Goodspeed and wife Abigail, 14 Aug 1800 (Sharon Deeds, 4:286 [FHL #028908]). Daniel conveyed the land to the Goodspeeds for "Love and Goodwill," an expression reserved for close relatives. Abigail, wife of Elisha Goodspeed, is a dau of Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable, while Daniel is the son of Samuel Gilbert of Colchester and Bolton, Conn. Samuel Gilbert was called "of Connecticut" on his marriage record at Barnstable, and Samuel of Colchester disappears from the records of Connecticut after 1754. Also see the letter of Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable to Rev. Eleazer Wheelock of Dartmouth College, 16 Aug 1775, concerning his son Samuel, Jr, and the letter from Samuel Gilbert, Jr, to Rev. Wheelock, 17 May 1774 (Wheelock Papers, #774317, #775466.1, Dartmouth College Archives [FHL #1688638]). These letters show that Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable had a son Samuel from a previous marriage.

NOTE: A son Benjamin, born at Concord on 18 Jan 1676/7, is often given to this family. See Thomas Bellows Peck THE BELLOWS GENEALOGY (Keene, NH,1898), 4 (FHL #929.273 B41752p). The birth rec, however, calls him only the "son of Mary Bellowes," with no mention of his alleged father, John Bellows (CONCORD BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS, 1635-1850 [Boston, 1891?], 20 [FHL #974.44/C4 V2c]). The latter's will also fails to mention him, even though Benjamin was living when the document was written. Moreover, there is only a space of nine months between the births of Nathaniel and Benjamin. It is believed, therefore, that Benjamin is not the son of John and Mary Bellows, but the illegitimate son of Mary, eldest dau of John Bellows, who was then 19 yrs old. | Bellows, Nathaniel (I12167)

MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Foote were baptized at Colchester St. James, Essex in 1617 and 1619 (FHL #1565420 item 17).
MAR #2: No mar rec found. The children of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Foote are identified as her own in the will of widow Elizabeth Welles of Wethersfield, 28 Mar 1678, no probate act, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:379-81 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Thomas Welles of Wethersfield deeded his interest and right in the house of Nathaniel Foote to the latter's son Nathaniel on 10 Oct 1646. Nathaniel was to pay his brother Robert and sister Sarah, as their portion due from Welles (Wethersfield Deeds, 1:159 [FHL #005991]). Hence, it is clear that Elizabeth married (1) Nathaniel Foote and (2), before 10 Oct 1646, Thomas Welles.
