MAR #1: Bridport par reg, as cited in Clarence Almon Torrey, "English Origin of Major Aaron Cooke," TAG, 11(1935):180 (FHL #973 D25aga). The wife is called Elizabeth Cooke on mar rec. However, she is clearly the widow of Aaron Cooke, who was buried at Bridport, 28 Dec 1615 (Ibid). Aaron Cooke and Elizabeth Charde were married at Thorncombe, 2 Sep 1610 (W. P. W. Phillimore and Edmund Nevill, eds, DORSETSHIRE PARISH REGISTERS- MARRIAGES, 7 vols. [London, 1906-1914], Thorncombe, 2:118 [FHL #942.33 K29d]). They had a son Aaron baptized at Bridport, 20 Mar 1613/4, who called Thomas Ford "father-in-law" [stepfather] in deed to Joseph Parsons, 14 Mar 1671/2 (Windsor, Conn., Deeds, 1:64 [FHL #006188]).
MAR #2: "Hartford Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1635-1855," Barbour Collection (typescript, 1928; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 117 (FHL #002971). Wife is called Ann Scott, "widow," on mar rec, apparently the widow of Thomas Scott of Hartford, who died on 6 Nov 1643 leaving a nuncupative will. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:32 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Thomas and Ann Ford are probably the parents of the Ann Ford who married Thomas Newberry at Windsor, 12 Mar 1676/7.
DEATH: Northampton Vital Records, 1:137 (FHL #186161). Death is also recorded in "Hampshire Records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths" (private ms of John Pynchon), entries for Northampton, p. 158 (FHL #014766). Probate, #1814, (n.s.) 8:37 (FHL #594175).
MAR #2: DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 101. The wife is called Relief Foster on mar rec. Relief relinquished her claim to the estate of Henry Leadbetter to her stepsons Ebenezer and Israel Leadbetter upon the receipt of 100 pounds in fulfillment of a pre-nuptial agreement she made with Henry, 31 Dec 1691. The document shows that she was the widow of Timothy Foster (Suffolk Co. Probate, [n.s.], 10:248 [FHL #594176]). Timothy Foster and Relief Dowse were married in Dorchester, 9 Mar 1681 (DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 24). 2430 BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. A deed from John Stevenson of Boston to Peter Thornton, 20 Aug 1652, describes property as having been granted to [blank] Waterman who died. Anthony Colby married his widow, and they sold the land to James Pennyman, who sold the land to Stevenson (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 11:176-77 [FHL #974.46 R2s]). Hence, Anthony Colby's wife was 1st married to a Waterman, given name unknown.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. Children of Anthony Colby and wife Susannah were born at Salisbury, 1640-1650/1 (VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY [Topsfield, MA, 1915], 54-55 [FHL #845110]).
MAR #3: No mar rec found. Susannah Whittridge petitioned the court on 28 Mar 1682 to sell part of the estate of her former husband, Anthony Colby, for her necessary support (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:409 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). The adm of estate of William Whittridge of Ipswich was granted to his son Thomas Whittridge on 19 Dec 1668. The name of the widow is not mentioned (PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 2:143-45). The estate records of widow Susannah Whittridge, below, mention her Colby children and her "son" Thomas Whittridge. Hence, Susannah married 3rd to William Whittridge.
DEATH: Death date of 8 Jul 1689 "or thereabouts" is from Susannah's inv of estate taken 28 Sep 1691 (Essex Co. Probate, [o.s.] 304:400 [FHL #860486]). Also see the division of estate, 1 Nov 1697 (Ibid, 304:473); and another division, 5 Aug 1700 (Ibid, 307:176-77 [FHL #875125]).

If this is true, William Sargent probably married a sister of Theophilus Shatswell, possibly Sybil. Theophilus is one of the children of Judith Shatwell, widow of Sibbertoft, Nhants. All of Judith's children are mentioned in the Chancery suit, Curwin v. Smith, 22 Nov 1627 (Chancery Proceedings, Charles I, cc 15, n. 56, quoted verbatim in David A. Macdonald, "A New Look at the Corwin and Shatswell Families," NEHGR, 150[1996]:185-89 [FHL #974 B2ne]). Of the children listed in the suit, only Sybil is not accounted for among the daughters. The name Sybil, however, does not appear among the children of William Sargent.

MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children were born to Ellis Barron and his wife Grace in Watertown, 1640 and 1643.
MAR #2: WATERTOWN RECORDS, 8 vols. (Watertown, MA, 1894-1939), 1:3:16 (FHL #014793). The wife is called Hannah Haukins on mar entry. Although Hannah is not called a widow, the will of Hannah Barron of Watertown, 18 Aug 1683, proved 6 Oct 1685, shows that she was formerly the wife of Timothy Hawkins, as she named Timothy Hawkins' children as her own (Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #1292 [FHL #386014]). Among the sons-in-law mentioned in Hannah's will was Benjamin Garfield, who receipted to Ellis Barron on 1 Apr 1673 for his wife Mehitable's share of the estate of her father, Timothy Hawkins (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 5:21 [FHL #554001]). Furthermore, Ellis Barron was bonded as guardian to Mehitable Hawkins on 4 Apr 1654 that he would provide all necessaries for her while she was living with the family (David Pulsifer, ed, "Records of the County of Middlesex," 4 vols. [transcript, 1851] 1:51 [FHL #892250]). Hence, it is clear that Ellis Barron married as his 2nd wife Hannah, widow of Timothy Hawkins. Timothy Hawkins married Anna Hammond.

MAR #1: No mar rec found. Katherine's son, John Thompson, is mentioned in the will of her 2nd husband, William Church of Gt. Bromley, 1 Oct 1574, no probate act, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, reg wills, 1566-76, Hore 421 (FHL #091235).
MAR #2: A wife Katherine is identified in the will of William Church, above.
MAR #3: William and Margery Church, Katherine's children by her 2nd mar, are called "my sister and brother" in the will of John Thompson of Gt. Bromley, 10 Jan 1578/9, proved 19 May 1579, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, reg wills, 1574-85, Roote 116 (FHL #091234). John Thompson is the son of Katherine by her 1st mar. The same will ordained John Harris "my father-in-law" executor. Since the testator was not married and listed no children in his will, it appears that John Thompson's "father-in-law" was not his wife's father but his step-father, a common usage of the term. Hence, Katherine married third to John Harris between 1574 and 1578/9.
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. Gt. Bromley burials before 1725 are missing. Katherine is not mentioned in the will of her 3rd husband, John Harris of Gt. Bromley, 4 Jun 1590, no probate act, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, orig wills, box 2, #23 (FHL #091249).

MAR #1: No mar rec found. Mary Pond and William Pond petitioned for the administration of the estate of Robert Pond(?) on 10 May 1648 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 2:246 [FHL #974.4 N2s]). Widow Mary Pond was dismissed from the church at Dorchester and admitted to the Cambridge church as the wife of Edward Shephard. Entry is undated but apparently before 1650/1 (Stephen Pascall Sharples, RECORDS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND, [Boston, 1906], 7 [FHL #974.44/C1 V27s]). On 24 Feb 1650/1, Edward Shephard of Cambridge deeded land in Dorchester to John Blackman of Dorchester, "lately belonging to Robert Pond, father-in-law to the said John, deceased" (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 3:72 [FHL #493932]). Hence, Mary married (1) Robert Pond, (2) Edward Shephard, whom she married between 1648 and 1650/1.
MAR #2: See discussion above.
DEATH: No death rec found. Mary is mentioned in the will of her 2nd husband, Edward Shephard of Cambridge, 1 Oct 1674, proved 20 Jun 1680, Middlesex Co. Probate files, 1st series, #20271 (FHL #421517).

MAR #1: No mar rec found. The wife is called "Frances Clark" on mar to Thomas Dewey, below. The inv of estate of Thomas Dewey of Windsor, 19 May 1648, lists among his children Mary Clarke, age 12, suggesting his wife was previously married to a Clark. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:6-7 (FHL #974.6 P2m). It has been stated that she was the widow of Joseph Clark, whose children, Joseph and Mary, were baptized at Windsor 30 Sep 1638. However, Windsor church recs show that Joseph Clark died in 1641, his wife (not named) died on 3 Apr 1639. Joseph Clark, presumably their son, died 2 May 1659, yet the latter was not mentioned with his sister Mary among the heirs of Thomas Dewey. See SOME EARLY RECORDS AND DOCUMENTS OF AND RELATING TO THE TOWN OF WINDSOR, 1639-1703, "The Matthew Grant Record, usually called the Old Church Record" (Hartford, 1930), 77, 79 (FHL #974.62/W1 N2c).
