BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Ann is mentioned in John's will, below. The will of widow Ann Pickworth of Manchester, 10 May 1682, proved 3 Apr 1683, shows that she is the mother of John's children (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 9:79-80 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). John and Ann were apparently married in Plymouth before 6 Feb 1631/2, when Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony wrote to Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts that John Pickworth "came but a soujournour to worke for a few weeks, in wch time be goate a wife, & so is longe since returned [to Massachusetts] duble, and hath no cause to complaine, except he hath goot a bad wife." The letter is quoted in its entirety in NEHGR, 2(1948):240-44 (FHL #974 B2ne). Bradford does not explain why he believed Ann was a bad wife. She is probably a dau of one of the Pilgrims of Plymouth, but her identity is obscure.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of John Pickworth of Manchester, 27 Jun 1663, proved 25 Nov 1663, inv 25 Aug 1663 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:428-29 [FHL #974.45 P2p]).

MAR: No mar rec found. Adm of estate of Timothy Hawkins was granted to his widow Hannah, 7 Oct 1651 (David Pulsifer, ed, "Records of the County of Middlesex," 4 vols. [transcript, 1851] 1:21-22 [FHL #892250]). The identification of Hannah as the dau of William Hammond is based on circumstantial evidence. The will of William Hammond of Watertown, 1 Jul 1662, proved 16 Dec 1662, mentions "my dau Barnes" (Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #10262 [FHL #397083]). Hannah's second husband was Ellis Barron, sometimes spelled Barnes in early recs. It is also stated in the will that this dau had previously been a widow but was presently married. Two of Timothy Hawkins' children chose Hammonds as guardians after the death of their father. On 4 Apr 1654 Timothy Hawkins [Jr] choseThomas Hammond as his guardian ("Records of the County of Middlesex," 1:51). Mehitable chose John Hammond as her guardian in Apr 1665. On 16 May 1665, Hammond acknowledged receipt of Mehitable's legacy from Ellis Barron. In this document he calls Mehitable his "kinswoman" (Middlesex Co. Court Files, 1665, fo. 38, #5 [FHL #901001]). Thomas and John Hammond are known sons of William Hammond of Watertown. Finally, the gravestone inscription of Hannah Barron shows that she died on 1 Sep 1685, "aged about 70 years" (William Thaddeus Harris, comp, EPITAPHS FROM THE OLD BURYING GROUND IN WATERTOWN [Boston, 1869], 3 [FHL #564365 item 4]). The age computes to a near exact match with the birth year of Anna [Hannah], dau of William Hammond.

MAR: No mar rec found. Anthony's wife is called "Ales" on the chr of children Nathaniel and Cornelius in Denton, Norfolk par reg (FHL #1657227 item 29).
DEATH: Don Gleason Hill, ed, THE RECORD OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS IN THE TOWN OF DEDHAM (Dedham, MA, 1886), 9 (FHL #974.47/D2 N2d). It appears this date was written in new style. Assuming it was old style, the date was incorrectly advanced to 1664 in Robert Brand Hanson, ed, VITAL RECORDS OF DEDHAM, 3 vols. (Bowie, MD, 1989), 2:81 (FHL #974.47/D2 V2hr). The later date conflicts with the 2nd mar of Anthony Fisher. | Alice (I9312)
