MAR: Springfield Vital Records, 1:13 (FHL #185414).
DEATH: Not recorded in Springfield vital recs. See the adm of estate of John Leonard of Springfield, 29 Mar 1676, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:174 (FHL #879184), inv 28 Mar 1676 (Ibid, 1:174), agreement of heirs 10 Jan 1676/7 (Ibid, 1:185), distribution 10 Sep 1714 (Ibid, 2:108), additional distribution 8 Apr 1718 (Ibid, 4:5). John Leonard was killed by the Indians early in 1676. See James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 4 vols. (Boston, 1860-62; repr Baltimore, 1979), 3:79 (FHL #974 D2s). The same claim is made in Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, HALE, HOUSE AND RELATED FAMILIES (Hartford, 1952), 678 (FHL #929.273 H135j). No documentary evidence has been found, but John's estate was administered on the same date as his dau Sarah Keep, who was killed by the Indians in the Longmeadow attack of 26 Mar 1676. John was probably killed in the same attack.
NOTE: No evidence has been found that John is the brother of James Leonard of Taunton, Mass., although this claim is often made. A royal descent is also claimed for John and James Leonard, which has been disproved. See Donald Lines Jacobus, "The Leonard Family of Taunton," TAG, 10(1933):162-66 (FHL #973 D25aga).

2663 BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: There is no proof that Bridget is the wife of Robert Bodfish. A Bridget Bodfish married Samuel Hinckley at Barnstable, 15 Dec 1657 ("Barnstable, Mass. Vital Records," MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT, 6[1904]:98 [FHL #974.4 D25md]). It is likely that this Bridget is the widow of Robert Bodfish who died in 1651. Samuel Hinckley was an older man with grown children when he married Bridget. They had no children of their own. The wording of Samuel's will also suggests that Bridget was previously married. See the will of Samuel Hinckley of Barnstable, 8 Oct 1662, proved 4 Mar 1662/3, Plymouth Colony Probate, 2:2:2-3 (FHL #567794).
DEATH: Sandwich Vital Records, 1:229 (FHL #904579). The year of death cannot be read on the microfilm copy due to excessive wearing of the original page. The year reads "165 [worn]" in "Sandwich, Mass. Vital Records", MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT, 14(1912):171 (FHL #974.4 D25md). The following entry on the page is dated 1654. Earlier local and family historians claim the year of Robert's death was 1651 (Frederick Freeman, THE HISTORY OF CAPE COD, 2 vols. [Boston, 1859-62], 2:49 [FHL #974.492 H2ff]; also Amos Otis, GENEALOGICAL NOTES OF BARNSTABLE FAMILIES, 2 vols.[Barnstable, MA, 1888-90], 1:68 [FHL #974.492/B1 D2oa]). It seems unlikely that an 18-year-old would have been chosen for this assignment (J. H. Trumbull and Charles J. Hoadly, eds, THE PUBLIC RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF CONNECTICUT, 15 vols. 2685 BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. Anne's will, below, identifies her brother Thomas Godbold. The will of Thomas Godbold of Badingham, 20 Dec 1541, proved 31 Jan 1541/2, identifies his sister Anne, wife of William Crispe of Laxfield (Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 14:158 [FHL #096914]). The same will contains evidence that he is the brother of Roger Godbold of Dennington. Hence, Anne Crispe, Thomas Godbold, and Roger Godbold are siblings. The key to the father of these three is in the tenement "Jaffreys," which was bequeathed by William Godbold of Dennington to his son Thomas in 1504 in exchange for his son's support for life. See the will of William Godbold of Dennington, 4 Apr 1504, proved 14 Dec 1507, Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 6:10 (FHL #096909). In 1552 Jaffreys was willed by Roger Godbold's son, William Godbold of Dennington, to his own son Roger. See the will of William Godbold of Dennington, 27 Aug 1552, proved 9 Feb 1552/3, Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 16:418 (FHL #096916). It is not clear how Jaffreys descended to William, son of Roger, but it must have been through Thomas Godbold, who received it in 1504. It is believed, therefore, that Thomas is the father of the three siblings, Anne, Thomas, and Roger Godbold. Date and place of Anne's birth are approximations.
MAR: A wife Anne is identified in the will of William Crispe of Laxfield, 20 Nov 1552, proved 19 Jan 1552/3, Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 16:409 (FHL #096916). Her own will, below, identifes Thomas Godbold as her brother.

No further record of Abigail has been found. George's wife is called Elizabeth in James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 2 (Boston, 1860-62; repr Baltimore,1965):88 (FHL #974 D2s). No evidence of a wife Elizabeth has been found.

See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:296 (FHL #974.5 P2m).

2691 BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. Cotton Mather states that Thomas Walley was about 61 yrs old when he died on 24 Mar 1678/9. Hence, he was born ca 1617 (Cotton Mather, MAGNALIA CHRISTI AMERICANA, 2 vols. [London, 1702; repr Hartford, 1853], 1:599 [FHL #1688545]). Thomas's father is sometimes identified as Robert Walley of London. See Frederick Freeman, THE HISTORY OF CAPE COD, 2 vols. (Boston, 1869), 1:290-91 (FHL #974.49 H2f), also Frederick Lewis Weis, THE COLONIAL CLERGY AND THE COLONIAL CHURCHES OF NEW ENGLAND (Lancaster, MA, 1936), 213 (FHL #974 D3wf). Robert Walley of St. Mary's Whitechapel, Middlesex, near London, made a will in 1651 naming a son Thomas. But the parish regs show that Robert Walley's son Thomas was baptized on 11 May 1607, making him ten yrs older than Rev. Thomas Walley of Barnstable, if we are to rely on the age assigned to him by Mather (St. Mary's Whitechapel par reg [FHL #094691]).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. The baptisms of three children of Thomas Walley and his wife Margery are found in the registers St. Mary Whitechapel, Middlesex, 1647-1650 (FHL #094691). Margery may be a sister of George Smith of London, whose will, 10 Jan 1658, proved 11 Feb 1658, calls Rev.Thomas Walley "brother." P.C.C., 287:95 (FHL #092251). It is also possible that Smith married a sister of Thomas Walley.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. A wife Sarah is identified in his will, below. Also see the letter from Thomas Walley to John Cotton, 20 Sep 1675, announcing his recent mar to "Mrs. Clark" (Edmund S. Morgan, THE PURITAN FAMILY, rev edition [Westport, CT, 1980], 55 [FHL #974 H2me]). The original letter is in the Curwin Papers, 3:46, American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Mass.
DEATH: Reg of the Barnstable West Parish Congregational Church, 7 (FHL #022364). Thomas was minister of this church at the time of his death. The month and year are given as Mar 1678, but the day is not legible. A transcription of the entry made before 1869 gives a complete date of 24 Mar 1678 (Frederick Freeman, THE HISTORY OF CAPE COD, [Boston, 1869], 1:290 [FHL #974.49 H2f]. The date is given as 24 Mar 1678/9 in Mather, MAGNALIA, 1:599. The same death date is given in Edmund Calamy, AN ACCOUNT OF THE MINISTERS EJECTED OR SILENCED AFTER THE RESTORATION OF 1660, 2 vols. (London, 1713), 2:32 (FHL #974 F2dce). On 4 Apr 1702 Samuel Sewell remarked in his diary that he passed the "worn" grave marker of Thomas Walley, which recorded a death date of 21 Mar 1677[/8] ("Judge Sewall's Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard Memoranda, 1702," NEHGR, 14[1860]:13 [FHL #974 B2ne]). Simon Bradstreet noted the death in hisdiary on 9 May 1678, proving that the date was 1677/8, not 1678/9 ("Bradsteet's Journal," NEHGR, 9[1855]:49). However, the will of Thomas Walley of Barnstable, 10 Dec 1677, proved 5 Mar 1677/8, suggests that Thomas was dead by 5 Mar 1677/8 (Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:2:115 [FHL #567794]). In light of the church record, the gravestone inscription, and other contemporary accounts, the probate date of Thomas Walley's will must be questioned. The death date of 24 Mar 1677/8 is accepted here. Mather and Calamy clearly advanced the date by one year, probably confused by the Barnstable church rec, which appears to give the death date in new style.
