3161 BIRTH: He is probably the John Hilpe, Jr, mentioned with John Hilpe, Sr, in the will of John Tayer of Thornbury, 1600, proved 19 Mar 1600/1, Consistory Court of Gloucester, orig wills, 1600, #86 (FHL #091387). Thus, he is very likely the son of John Hilpe, Sr. Date and place of birth are approximations. John matriculated from Magdalen Hall, Oxford University in 1579, age 16 (Joseph Foster, ALUMNI OXONIENSES, 4 vols. [Oxford, 1891-92], 1:715 [FHL #942.57/D1 J2ox]).
MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Alice is mentioned in a deed to William Peters in 1604 ("Pedes Finium or Excerpts from the Feet of Fines in the County of Gloucester," TRANSACTIONS OF THE BRISTOL AND GLOUCESTERSHIRE ARCHAELOGICAL SOCIETY FOR 1892-93, 17 [1893?]:214 [FHL #1426044]).
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. John was living in Thornbury in 1608 when he was registered as fit for military duty and furnished the militia with two "corslets" [suits of armor] (John Smith, MEN & ARMOUR OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE IN 1608 [1902; repr Gloucester, 1980], 224 [FHL #942.41 M2s]).

3165 BIRTH: Henry Adams of Barton St. David signed a mar lic on 27 Aug 1574, and on 25 May 1586 Henry Adams of Barton St. David, aged 55 years, testified in the Bishop's Consistory Court (J. Gardner Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS OF SOMERSETSHIRE [New York, 1927], 32-33, 35-36 [FHL #929.273 Ad17bj]). Hence, the calculated birth year of 1531. Bartlett seems to make Henry a son of John Adams based solely on the fact that he is the only Adams on the 1539 muster roll of the tithing of Barton St. David (Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS, 27). He calls widow "Alys" Adams of the 1542/3 subsidy roll of Barton St. David the likely widow of John (Ibid, 28). While these conections seem possible, the evidence appears inconclusive.
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. Barton St. David par regs are lost for the period. No BTs have survived for 1596. See the adm of estate of Henry Adams, 12 Aug 1596, Diocesan Registry Bath and Wells (Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS, 37-38). Records of this court were destroyed in 1942.

3166 BIRTH: Henry Hawes and his son Thomas are mentioned in the will of Thomas Hawes of Princes Risborough, 27 May 1554, proved 3 Oct 1554, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, reg wills, 10:50 (FHL #088495). No relationship is indicated. He is said to be Henry Hawes of Sanderton, the testator of 1562, in Frank M. Hawes, RICHARD HAWES OF DORCHESTER (Hartford 1932), 11, 12-13 (FHL #929.273 H312h). However, this connection is also uncertain, as Henry's will of 1562 mentions no son Thomas.

3168 BIRTH: Henry is called a "probable" son of William Squire in J. Gardner Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS OF SOMERSETSHIRE (New York, 1927), 52 (FHL #929.273 Ad17bj). Bartlett apparently based his conclusion on the fact that no other candidates for Henry's father were found in the parish of Charlton Mackrell where Henry resided. Date of birth is calculated from age "about 16" given on deposition. Place of birth is suggested by William Squire's known residence in Charleton Mackrell in 1545 and 1554 (Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS, 52). Also see the will of John Drue, Jr, of Charleton Mackrell, which was witnessed by William "Squier," Parson, on 22 Jan 1564/5 (SOMERSET WILLS FROM EXETER, Somerset Record Society, 62[1952]:134 [FHL #942.38 B4s]).
DEATH: No death rec found. Henry was dead before 25 Dec 1649, when his dau Margaret and her husband John Shepherd of Braintree, Mass. granted power of attorney to John Adams. Henry Squire was reportedly "late of Kinweston neere Somerton in Somersetshire" (ASPINWALL NOTARIAL RECORDS, 1644-1651, 32nd Report Boston Record Commissioners [Boston, 1903], 267 [FHL #974.461 H2b]).

3178 BIRTH: Henry is identified in the will of his father, Richard Gould of Stoke Mandeville, Bucks, 12 Sep 1558, proved 10 Oct 1558, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, reg wills, 14:100 (FHL #088496). Date and place of birth are approximations. Although his father lived in Stoke Mandeville when he made his will, he wished to be buried in Bovingdon and bequeathed money to the church there. This strongly suggests that Richard Gould came from Bovingdon. Moreover, his will states that his brother [name illegible, document torn] resided in Bovingdon. Since the widow of Richard Gould wished to be buried in Stoke Mandeville, it seems likely that Richard moved there from Bovingdon when he married his 2nd wife.

Femell, Henry (I6898)

3187 BIRTH: Henry is identified second in the will of his father, Richard Turner of Hothfield, 15 Jan 1549 [1548/9], proved 11 Apr 1549, Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury, reg wills, 26:185 (FHL #188932). He is also identified second in the will of his mother, Agnes Turnor of Hothfield, 23 Dec 1558, proved 20 Apr 1559, Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury, reg wills, 34:130 (FHL #188936). Date and place of Henry's birth are approximations. Henry is identified as a son of Henry Turner of Sutton Valence, Kent in the 1663 Visitation of Kent (Joseph Jackson Howard and Robert Hovenden, eds, SOME PEDIGREES FROM THE VISITATION OF KENT, 1663-1668 [London, 1887], 2-3 [FHL #942.23 D2ho]). However, this connection is almost certainly inaccurate. Not only is the evidence strong that Henry is a son of Richard Turner of Hothfield, but the visitation pedigree is chronologically unlikely if not impossible. It appears that a generation may have been skipped. The Hothfield Turner family may have originated in Sutton Valence at an earlier time.

He is also mentioned 2nd in the will of his grandmother, Margery Godbold of Dennington, 15 Nov 1542, proved 14 Dec 1542, Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 14:283 (FHL #096914). Date and place of birth are approximations.

The will of William Greenlinge of Stradbroke, 28 Mar 1599, proved 11 Sep 1599, gives to "my sister Bearte...Frances her daughter...and...all her sonnes" (P.C.C., 71 Kidd [FHL #092005]). Henry Bert had children baptized at Stradbroke, 1559-1576, including a dau Frances, 6 Jan 1562/3. The other surviving children were sons (G. S. Cary, comp, "Abstract of Baptisms in the Parish of Stradbroke, Suffolk" [typescript, 1941], 8-17 [FHL #991991 item 8]).
