BIRTH: No birth rec found, and no proof has been found that Mehitable is a dau of John Hillman; yet it can hardly be doubted, as John's family were the only Hillmans on Martha's Vineyard, where Mehitable resided. She is identified as a dau of John Hillman in Charles Edward Banks, HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, 3 vols (Boston, 1911-25; repr Edgartown, MA, 1966), 3:195 (FHL #974.494 H2b). BIRTH: No birth rec found, and no proof has been found that Samuel is a son of John Hillman; yet it can hardly be doubted, as John's family were the only Hillmans on Martha's Vineyard, where Samuel resided. MAR: VITAL RECORDS OF CHILMARK (Boston, 1904; repr with addenda by Catherine Merwin Mayhew, Bowie, MD, 1991), 55 (FHL #974.494/C1 V22v). BIRTH: No birth rec found, and no proof that Elizabeth is a dau of Joseph Chamberlin. Nevertheless, it seems highly likely that Elizabeth is a member of this family. All of the early Chamberlins in Colchester appear to descend from Joseph. Elizabeth's birth year is calculated from age 39 on death rec, below, suggesting she was born in 1698. Joseph lived in Hadley at this time, where the vital records are incomplete and where two other proved children of Joseph were born but not recorded. BIRTH: No birth rec found, and no proof that Experience is the dau of Thomas Look. However, the relationship is highly likely. Experience Look married at Lynn, where Thomas Look lived. She is the right age to fit into Thomas's family, and no other Look family has been identified in the area. BIRTH: No birth rec found, and no proof that Hannah is the dau of John Coller. However, no other Coller families lived in the county at this time, and Hannah lived in Watertown, where John Coller resided. Chronologically, she fits well into the family of John and Hannah Coller. Hannah was probably born at Watertown, where John Coller was living when he testified at Cambridge Court, 6 Feb 1658/9 (Middlesex Co. Court Files, 1658, fo. 17, #3g [FHL #878221]). MAR: WATERTOWN RECORDS, 1:3:47. Name of wife was Hannah "Cotler" in the published record but her surname was interpreted as Hannah "Coller" in a 1852 transcript of Watertown vital recs (Joseph Craft, comp, "The Records of the Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the town of Watertown from the year 1630" [transcript, 1852], 112 [FHL #745869]). This Mary Couch married James Spinney at Kittery, 28 Dec 1718 (Ibid, 49). James Spinney received a portion in the division of the estate of Joseph Couch, Sr, in his wife's right, 21 Jul 1729 (York Co. Probate, 4:33-34 [FHL #012783]). Since, Joseph Couch, Jr, was dead by 1710, his portion apparently went to James Spinney, husband of the only child of Joseph Couch, Jr, proving that Joseph Couch, Jr, was a son of Joseph Couch, Sr. Date and place of birth are approximations based on family history and chronology.
MAR: No mar rec found. As shown above, Joseph had a wife Anne by 1696. She married 2nd to David Hill at Portsmouth, NH, 25 Oct 1710, as Anne Couch ("A Book Conteining ye Account of the Gathering & Carrying on ye Church of Christ in Portsmouth Anno 1671" [typescript, n.d.], 1:299 [FHL #015572]). Although the given name of the husband is not stated, he was apparently the David Hill, as who had a dau Anne by his wife Anne born at Kittery, 31 Jul 1711 (VITAL RECORDS OF KITTERY, 39). David Hill died before 6 Nov 1718, when Anne married Nicholas Weeks (Ibid, 49). A dau Anne Weeks and granddaughter Anne Hill are mentioned in the will of Margaret Adams of Kittery, widow of Christopher Adams, 30 Jun 1720, proved 23 Jan 1722/3 (William Sargent, ed, MAINE WILLS, 1640-1760, [Portland, ME, 1887; repr Baltimore, 1972], 235-38 [FHL #974.1 P2s]). BIRTH: No birth rec found. A letter from John Woodcock of Rehoboth to the governor and council, 26 Apr 1676, asks for assistance and protection from the Indians who already "have slain two of my family." The letter is quoted in full in John Daggett, A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF ATTLEBOROUGH (Boston, 1894), 108 (FHL #974.485/A2 H2da). Nathaniel's death rec reports that he was "slain" in May 1676 (Rehoboth Vital Records [orig ms] 1:54 [FHL #562559]). The Plymouth Colony recs, below, place the death of Nathaniel on 28 Apr 1676, two days after John Woodcock's letter. Nevertheless, as there was only one Woodcock family in Rehoboth into whom Nathaniel could belong, it seems assured that Nathaniel was one of John's sons. The date of the letter or the death entry are apparently incorrect by two or more days. The death was probably recorded well after the event.

The inv of estate of Arthur Alger of Scarborough, Maine, 26 Jun 1676, names three of the children including Abraham Roberts (Essex Co., Mass. Probate, 301:81-82 [FHL #860485]). BIRTH: No birth rec found. Amesbury vital records are defective for this period. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 3:418-19 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). He should not be confused with his elder brother John, who was born on 26 Jun 1655. Although no death record has been found for the elder John, his brother William, born 18 May 1663, is called eldest son of Philip Watson-Challis in a deed to John Dole of Newbury, 6 Apr 1688 (Essex Co. Deeds, 21:196 [FHL #866023]). Hence, this John was born after 1663 and probably after 1673, when Thomas was born. Year of birth is approximated at 1677.
