Probate [Hartford District], 1:4, paginated from back of book [FHL #029160]). Date of birth is calculated from age 72 on gravestone inscription (personal visit to Broad Brook Cemetery by Robert S. Fales, Oct 1976, and recorded in undated letter to Clifford L. Stott). This inscription is incorrectly given as 1 Jun 1845 in Vermont Vital Records, 1st series, -1870 (FHL #027633). Also see the adm of estate of David Moore of Sharon, below, which gives death date as 1 Jan 1845. Place of birth is suggested by guardianship, above, and 1774 Rhode Island Census, which includes David Moore in Richmond (John R. Bartlett, ed, CENSUS OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE COLONY OF RHODE ISLAND...1774 [Baltimore, 1969], 200 [FHL #974.5 X2p,200]). It is also significant that David Moore, Sr, had a land interest in Sharon. MAR: No mar rec found. Thomas Look's wife Elizabeth consented to a deed of gift to son Samuel, 7 Aug 1718 (Dukes Co. Deeds, 3:338-39 [FHL #911712]). On 22 Dec 1681 Thomas Look of Nantucket acknowledged receipt of land he received from his "father-in-law" Richard Swain (Nantucket Co. Deeds, 1:2:56 [FHL #906232]). Richard Swain had no dau Elizabeth, but Richard married Jane, widow of George Bunker, of Topsfield in 1658, whose eldest dau was Elizabeth. Hence, it appears that Thomas Look married Elizabeth, dau of George Bunker and stepdaughter of Richard Swain.

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Elizabeth is identified in the will of her father, David Moore of Exeter, 7 Nov 1804, proved 2 Jan 1806, Exeter Probate, 7:98 (FHL #932355). Year of birth is calculated from age 72 yrs on gravestone inscription, below.
MAR: No mar rec found. The marriage of Elizabeth is proved by circumstantial evidence. She is called Elizabeth Sheldon in her father’s will in 1804. The same will mentions a granddaughter Mary, wife of Nathan Moore. Nathan is the son of Silas Moore, David’s brother. The 1850 census shows that Nathan’s wife Mary was 64 years old (1850 U.S. census [free schedule], Richmond, Washington Co., R.I., p. 248, dwelling 126, family135 [FHL #444761]). The death of this Mary Moore on 18 Apr 1876 shows that she was born in Richmond, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Sheldon, aged 89 years, 9 months, 1 day (Richmond Deaths, 1:25 [FHL #930852]). Hence, Elizabeth Sheldon is the dau of David Moore. Furthermore, the gravestone inscription of Elizabeth, wife of James Sheldon, indicates she was a Moore by birth. The marriage date is found in Frank L. Greene, DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH GREENE OF WESTERLY, R.I. (Albany, NY: Joel Munsell’s Sons, 1894), 40 (FHL #973.272 G83g).

Date and place of birth are approximations based on her probable age at marriage, known birth dates of siblings, and birth order suggested in her father's settlement of estate.

John Blaisdell married Elizabeth Hoyt at Amesbury, 6 Jan 1692/3 (cited below). Hence, Elizabeth's 1st husband was a Hoyt. BIRTH: No birth rec found. Evidence that Joseph is a son of John and Abigail Benjamin is found in a deed dated 30 Oct 1686, in which Joseph Benjamin and wife Jemima of Barnstable sold land in Cambridge to Walter Hastin (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 10:61 (FHL #554003). Joseph mentioned his brother Abel Benjamin in this deed. Abel Benjamin and Abigail Woodward are identified as siblings in the will of Joshua Benjamin of Charlestown, 5 Apr 1684, proved 17 Jun 1684, Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #1574 (FHL #386018). Abigail is a proved dau of John and Abigail Benjamin; hence, Joseph and his brothers Abel and Joshua are also sons of John and Abigail Benjamin. John Benjamin, Sr, arrived in New England in 1632 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 [Baltimore, 1987], 102-103 [FHL #973 W2col]). The family resided in Cambridge until removal to Watertown about 1643. The time of removal is framed by the inventory of John Benjamin's land at Cambridge, 6 Sep 1642 (THE REGISTER BOOK OF THE LANDS AND HOUSES IN THE "NEW TOWNE" AND THE TOWN OF CAMBRIDGE [Cambridge, 1896], 114 [FHL #974.44/C1 R2c]), and a deed from John Benjamin "of Watertown" to Barnaby Wind, 28 Feb 1643/4 (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 1:51 [FHL #974.46 R2s]). It is likely that Joseph was born during the interval 1632-43. He was born in Cambridge on 16 Sep 1633 according to Gloria Wall Bicha and Helen Benjamin Brown, comp, THE BENJAMIN FAMILY IN AMERICA (n.p., 1977), 9, 13 (FHL #929.273 B438). The birth is not recorded in Cambridge vital recs.

However, no evidence has been found in original source records, and the birth date appears to be derived from the death date less 42 years. Joshua's gravestone at Charlestown indicates he was 42 yrs old when he died on 6 May 1684 (Thomas Bellows Wyman, THE GENEALOGIES AND ESTATES OF CHARLESTOWN, 2 vols.
