BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John administered the estate of Ralph Tomkins of Salem, 27 Nov 1666, although the rec does not state his relationship to Ralph (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:75-76 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). However, John is called "brother" in the will of Samuel Tomkins of Bridgewater, Mass., 20 May 1673, proved 7 Nov 1695, Plymouth Co. Probate, 1:228-29 (FHL #550708). Samuel is a proved son of Ralph Tomkins. John was probably born in 1609 for which year there are no BTs for Wendover.
MAR #1: W. P. W. Phillimore, et al, eds, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE PARISH REGISTERS- MARRIAGES, 21 vols. (London, 1902-1915), Edlesborough, 1:30 (FHL #942.575 K29bu).
MAR #2: VITAL RECORDS OF SALEM, 6 vols. (Salem, MA, 1916-25), 4:387 (FHL #974.45/S1 V2e). Wife Mary Read was probably the widow of Thomas Read, who died in Salem before Jun 1670, when the court ordered John Tomkins and others to lay out her thirds (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 4:266 [FHL #974.45 P2e]).
DEATH: VITAL RECORDS OF SALEM, 6 vols. (Salem, MA, 1916-25), 6:276. Also see the adm of estate of John Tomkins of Salem, 28 Jun 1681, inv 30 Jun 1681, et al (PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3:426-28).

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John Chater and wife Alice testified in Ipswich Court, 19 Nov 1657, concerning the ownership of a steer. Barbara Isly deposed that John Chater brought the animal to his "father Emery" to be killed (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:56 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). This could be no other than John Emery. Hence, is appears that John Emery had a dau Alice who married John Chater. She was probably born abt 1621/2, possibly at Whiteparish, Wilts, where John Emery and Alice Grantham were married in 1620. Alice is also mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Walter Grantham of West Dean, Wilts, n.d., proved 5 Feb 1622/3, P.C.C., 10 Swann (FHL #092091).
MAR: See discussion, above. The first child of John and Alice Chater was born in Newbury in 1644.

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John Hillman deposed, aged about 47 yrs, on 6 Sep 1698 in the case of Simon Athearn v. Praying Indians, Suffolk Co. Court Files, #4714 (FHL #910808). Copy of this deposition is found in file #4974 (FHL #910811). John is referred to as "an Englishman" in the complaint by Athearn, 1 Oct 1685 (File #4714).
MAR: No mar rec found. John called Samuel Cottle "brother" in a deposition of 6 Sep 1698 (Suffolk Co. Court Files, #4714). John was presumably married to Samuel's sister, a dau of Edward Cottle. No contemporary document has been found to identify her given name. She is called Hannah Cottle in Charles Edward Banks, HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, 3 vols. (Boston, 1911-25; repr Edgartown, MA, 1966), 3:195 (FHL #974.494 H2b).

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John is called grandson in deed a from Stephen Bachiler, 20 Apr 1647 (New Hampshire Province Deeds, 13:221 [FHL #015415]). Stephen Bachiler, his wife Helen, and dau Ann Sandburn, age 30, applied for a license to pass beyond the sea to visit Stephen's sons and daughters in Flushing, Holland in Jun 1631 (Henry F. Waters, "Genealogical Gleanings in England," NEHGR, 45[1891]:237 [FHL #974B2ne]). John is apparently the son of widow Ann Sandburn, but John's father is unknown. John's date of birth is calculated from a deposition, dated 7 Sep 1680, in which he declared he was about 60 yrs old (New Hampshire Province Court Papers, 5:243 [FHL #980934]).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of John Sanborn and his wife Mary are recorded in Hampton, 1651-68 (George F. Sanborn, Jr, and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, eds, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 2 vols. [Boston, 1992-98], 1:544-547, 549-51, 553, 561 [FHL #974.26/H3 V2s]). Mary is identified in the estate division of her father, Robert Tuck of Hampton, 11 Apr 1665 (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 9 vols., repr of New Hampshire State Papers Series, vols. 31-39 [Bowie, MD, 1989-90], 1:79-81 [FHL #974.2 P2p]).
MAR #2: Sanborn, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 1:564. The wife is called Margaret "Moulton" in this entry. She was apparently the widow of William Moulton of Hampton, whose will, n.d., proved 11 Oct 1664, mentions his wife Margaret (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1:66-70). The will of Robert Page of Hampton, 9 Sep 1679-11 Nov 1679, identifies his dau Margaret Sanborn, her Moulton children and her son Jonathan Sanborn (Ibid, 1:236-41). Hence, Margaret Page married (1) William Moulton, (2) John Sanborn.
DEATH: Sanborn, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 1:118. Also see the inv of estate of John Sanborn of Hampton, 22 Feb 1692/3 (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1:374). Several documents refer to John's will, but it is apparently lost.

She is apparently the widow of John Dane, who died at Roxbury, 14 Sep 1658, and who was married there to Ann Chandler, 2 July 1643 (Ibid, 2:103,502). Ann Chandler was the widow of William Chandler, who married Ann Bayford at Farnham, Essex, Eng, 4 Nov 1626 (Farnham par reg [FHL #1472222 item 32]). William Chandler died at Roxbury, Mass., 26 Jan 1641/2. On 19 Oct 1649 John Dane petitioned the General Court for a settlement of the estate of William Chandler, whose widow he married (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 3:177 [FHL #974.4 N2s]). The Chandler family is documented in G. Birth year is calculated from age 8 on the passenger list of the ship "Francis" of Ipswich, 30 Apr 1634. See Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 (Baltimore, 1987), 114 (FHL #973 W2col). John's birth in Bocking is suggested by the marriage of his parents there in 1618 and the bur of his sister Elizabeth at Bocking in 1625. Chr recs in the fragmentary par regs of Bocking are lost for the period 1606-1654.
MAR #1: Springfield Vital Records, 1:13 (FHL #185414). On this entry the wife's surname is obscured by a torn page. Her given name was Anne, and she is called "widow." She is called Anne Munden, widow of Abraham Munden of Springfield, in Thomas B. Warren, "Springfield Families" (typescript, 1935; Conn. Valley Historical Museum, Springfield, Mass.), 636 (FHL #014787). This is probably correct, as Rowland Stebbins, father of John, gave 10 shillings to Mary Munde [Munden] in his will, above. Mary is the dau of Abraham and Anne Munden; hence, Mary appears to be John's stepdaughter. Abraham Munden and Anne Munson were married at Springfield, 16 May 1644, and he died, "drowned in ye great river at ye falls," 29 Oct 1645 (Springfield Vital Records, 1:13, 45 [FHL #185414]).

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John is identified in the will of his father, Rev. Thomas Walley of Barnstable, 10 Dec 1677, proved 5 Mar 1677/8, Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:2:115 (FHL #567794). Date of birth is calculated from age 69 on death rec, below.
MAR: No mar rec found. Children of John Walley and his wife Sarah were born at Bristol, Rhode Island, 1685-91 ("Transcript of the Records of Marriages, Births, and Deaths in the Town of Bristol" [unpublished ms, n.d.; Town Hall, Bristol, RI], 1:337, 338 [FHL #912787 item 2]). It is possible that John had two wives named Sarah. Bristol vital recs mention the death of Mrs. Sarah Walley on 2 Mar 1692. However, the death of Sarah, wife of John Walley, 11 Nov 1711, is recorded in the Boston Death Register, 6:72 (FHL #593709). It is also possible that Mrs. Sarah Walley who died at Bristol was the widow of Rev. Thomas Walley, John's father.
DEATH: Boston Death Register, 6:72 (FHL #593709). Also see the will of John Walley of Boston, 4 Jan 1711, proved 25 Feb 1711, Suffolk Co. Probate, #3386, (o.s.) 17:401-404; 18:75-83 (FHL #584133).

MAR: Messing par reg (FHL #1472534 item 8). The wife's surname is now only partly legible (i.e. "L...it"). A study of this entry by William Brigg in 1901 concluded that the name is Levit. These is also external evidence of a relationship between the White and Levit families in Essex. See "The Children of Robert White of Messing," NEHGR, 55(1901):25-26 (FHL #974 B2ne).
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. See the will of John White of Hartford, 17 Dec 1683, proved 6 Mar 1683/4, inv 23 Jan 1683/4, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:385-86 (FHL #974.6 P2m).
NOTE: John White's appearance next to William Goodwin on the "Lyon" in 1632 strongly suggests that he is identical to John White of Shalford. See Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 (Baltimore, 1987), 102-103 (FHL #973 W2col). Also see the estate records of John Skinner of Windsor (Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:151). Skinner was the husband of Mary Loomis, dau of Joseph Loomis and niece of John White. On 4 Mar 1651/2 the court confirmed that John White had made a bargain with Skinner's widow for the purchase of some land that had belonged to John Skinner. This suggests that John White had immigrated to Connecticut.

The will indicates John was under age 22 in 1666. Date of birth is estimated from probable age at marriage.
MAR #1: John's first wife is uncertain. She might have been the Anne, wife of John Norrington, who was buried at Ashford 9 Jun 1686, but this is not certain, as there were other John Norrington's in the area. John's birth in Braintree is suggested by the family's continued residence in the town from at least 1617-1635. John's father, Joseph Loomis, is called "of Braintree" in the will of John's grandfather, Robert White of Messing, 27 May 1617-20 Jun 1617, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, orig wills, 8:40 (FHL #091258). MAR #1: First wife is unknown, but it is suspected that John was married prior to his marriage to Tamasin. The wording of John Mayo's estate settlement, below, suggests that Tamasin was not the mother of his children. MAR #1: Baltonsborough par reg, as cited in Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS OF SOMERSETSHIRE, 75. Power of attorney from John Shepheard of Braintree to John Adams of Concord, 25 Dec 1649, shows that Jonathan was still in Baltonsborough (ASPINWALL NOTARIAL RECORDS, 1644-1651, 32nd Report Boston Record Commissioners, [Boston, 1903], 267 [FHL #974.461 H2b]). Margery Pepperill is identified as a dau in the will of John Bray of Kittery, 22 Jan 1688/9, proved 15 Jul 1690 (Ibid, 88-90). The will also mentions an unmarried dau Mary. The Mary Deering referred to in the will of Margery Pepperill could not be wife of Roger Deering, Joseph's eldest brother (who also had a wife Mary), because Roger was married before 1688/9, when John Bray's dau Mary was still single.
