4451 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Joseph is identified as a son of William Couch of Co. Cornwall on apprenticeship indenture to John Bray, shipwright (YORK DEEDS, 18 vols. [Portland, ME, 1887-1910], 2:62 [FHL #974.195R2m]). Date of birth is an approximation.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Roger Deering and Joseph Couch sold land in Kittery to "our brother" Thomas Deering, 23 Mar 1709/10 (YORK DEEDS,7:197). Roger and Thomas are proved sons of Roger Deering. Hence, Joseph Couch married a dau of Roger Deering. Her given name is rarely seen. She is apparently the Johanna Couch who witnessed a deed from Francis Morgan to John Bray, 1 Apr 1677 (YORK DEEDS, 3:24). It is known that Roger Deering had a dau Joanna, per wills of her grandparents, Clement and Sarah Palmer. The only other dau of Roger Deering was Sarah, who married Dennis Hicks.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. Widow Katherine Couch and son Roger Couch exhibited an inv of estate of Joseph Couch, 22 Feb 1713/4, below. The mar apparently occurred before 12 Apr 1712, when she witnessed a deed for Joseph Couch (YORK DEEDS, 8:144).
DEATH: No death rec found. See the adm of estate of Joseph Couch of Kittery, 22 Feb 1713/4, inv 22 Jan 1713/4 (York Co. Probate, 2:80,81-82 [FHL #012782]), adm to son William 4 Apr 1726, additional inv and acct 17 Jun 1727 (Ibid, 3:199,245 [FHL #012783]), division of estate 21 Jul 1729 (Ibid, 4:33-34).

4452 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Joseph is identified in a pedigree compiled in 1710 by his great-grandson, Henry Sherburne of Portsmouth, NH (b. 1680), Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire, reprinted in Walter Goodwin Davis, THE ANCESTRY OF JOSEPH WATERHOUSE (Portland, ME, 1949), 93-94 (FHL #929.272 W292d). Henry's pedigree is corroborated by the Sherburne pedigree found in Sir Henry Chauncey, HISTORICAL ANTIQUITIES OF HERTFORDSHIRE (London, 1700), 62 (FHL #Q942.58 V22c). Chauncey's work was compiled during the life of Justinian Sherburne, a nephew of Joseph. It is presumably through him that Chauncey received his infomation. Date of birth is an approximation.
MAR: Pedigrees compiled by Sherburne and Chauncey, above.

4455 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Joseph received land in Windsor, Connecticut on his father's right, 10 Oct 1646, with other children of Thomas Newberry (Windsor Deeds, 1:6 [FHL #006188]). He is also identified in the will of his grandfather, Christopher Dabinot of Upway, Dorset, 1 July 1637, proved 4 Aug 1637, P.C.C., 113 Goare (FHL #092138). Date and place of birth are approximations based on history and chronology of family in Marshwood. See J. Gardner Bartlett, NEWBERRY GENEALOGY (Boston, 1914), 35-36 (FHL #000018).
MAR: No mar rec found. Joseph returned to England and had three children recorded at Whitechurch-Canonicorum, Dorset, 1654-1658 (Bartlett, NEWBERRY GENEALOGY, 46-51). His wife's name is not recorded in these entries.
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. Joseph was living in Marshwood on 26 Feb 1673/4, when he administered the nuncupative will of his aunt, Anne Gibbs of Marshwood, widow, P.C.C., 19 Bunce (FHL #092310). He was still there on 20 Dec 1675, when he brought a suit in chancery against his cousin Gideon Haynes (Bartlett, NEWBERRY GENEALOGY, 47-50, citing Chancery Proceedings, Six Clerks Series, Collins 59-59).

4456 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Joseph was a legatee in the agreement of heirs of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, 2 Dec 1658, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:135-36 [FHL #974.6 P2m]). He is mentioned 1st, probably indicating he is the eldest son. Date and place of birth are approximations. Joseph's birth in Braintree is suggested by the family's continued residence in the town from at least 1617-1635. Joseph's father, Joseph Loomis, is called "of Braintree" in the will of Joseph's grandfather, Robert White of Messing, 27 May 1617-20 Jun 1617, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, orig wills, 8:40 (FHL #091258). Furthermore, Joseph Loomis was a member of the Braintree parish vestry from 1619-1635 (F. G. Emmison, EARLY ESSEX TOWN MEETINGS [London, 1970], 11-50 passim (FHL #942.67 K2e). Additional evidence is found in Elias Loomis, DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH LOOMIS IN AMERICA, rev by Elisha S. Loomis (New Haven, CT, 1875; rev edition Fresno, CA, 1981), 21-22 (FHL #929.273 L873Le).
MAR #1: "Windsor Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1637-1850," Barbour Collection (typescript, 1929; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 175 (FHL #002983).
MAR #2: SOME EARLY RECORDS AND DOCUMENTS OF AND RELATING TO THE TOWN OF WINDSOR, CONNETICUT, 1639-1703, "The Matthew Grant Record, usually called the Old Church Record" (Hartford, 1930), 49 (FHL #974.62/W1 N2c). It has been published that Joseph married Mary Chauncey on this date. This is not correct. See "The Second Wife of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, Conn.," NEHGR, 90(1936):385; 92(1938):203, 303 (FHL #974 B2ne).

4457 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Joshua is identified in the will of his mother, Rose Steward of Cockfield, 10 Nov 1633, proved 27 Jun 1649, Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury, reg wills, 56:207 (FHL #097090). Date and place of birth are approximations. Joshua was probably born at Cockfield in 1591-1592, which years are missing from Cockfield par reg. Steward, Joshua (I8808)

4458 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Joshua Stubbs of Charlestown, "with the consent of my mother[-in-law] Abigall Benjamen and of my wife Abigal Stubs," sold land to John Underwood, 8 Nov 1654 (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 2:273-75 [FHL #554000]). Abigal Benjamin was the widow of John Benjamin of Watertown, as shown by a deed of exchange between Abigail Benjamin and Thomas Merritt, et al, 14 Nov 1659 (Ibid, 2:83). Hence, Abigail, wife of Joshua Stubbs, is believed to be the dau of John and Abigail Benjamin. Also see the will of Mary Benjamin of Watertown, 16 May 1646, proved 4 Jun 1646, which calls Abigail Stubbs, "sister" (Suffolk Co. Probate, #41, [o.s.] 1:38 [FHL #584127]). The will of Joshua Benjamin, below, also mentions his sister Abigail. Date of birth is calculated from age 47 on deposition in Middlesex Co. Court Papers, fo. 59, pt. 1 (FHL #901001).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. See above discussion for mar of Joshua Stubbs and Abigail Benjamin.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. John and Abigail Woodward had children born in Charlestown as early as 1659 and probably earlier. The will of John Woodward of Watertown, below, mentions his wife Abigail and daughters-in-law [stepdaughters] Mary Traine and Elizabeth Stimpson. Mary and Elizabeth are daughters of Joshua and Abigail Stubbs. Mary Stubbs married John Traine in Watertown, 24 Mar 1674, and Elizabeth Stubbs married Jonathan Stimpson at Cambridge, 8 Jul 1669. The will of Joshua Benjamin of Charlestown, 5 Apr 1684, proved 27 Jan 1684/5, also mentions his sister Abigail "Woodward" (Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #1574 [FHL #386018]). Final payment for the sale of land from Joshua Stubbs to John Underwood was made to "Goody Woodward...which was the wife of Joshua Stubbs" (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 2:273-75 [FHL #554000]). Hence, Abigail, widow of Joshua Stubbs, became the wife of John Woodward probaby about 1656.

Richard Herbert gave information to the heralds in the 1620 Visitation of Devon that he married Marcella, dau of William Symonds of Exeter (Frederick Thomas Colby, ed, THE VISITATION OF THE COUNTY OF DEVON IN THE YEAR 1620, Publications of the Harleian Society, Visitation Series, vol. 6 [London, 1872], 280 [FHL #942 B4h]).

Margaret had siblings chr at Wingrave. The parish registers of Wingrave are lost for this period, and several years are missing from the BTs. BUR: Bethersden ATs (FHL #1751588 item 3). "Daughter of John Chittenden."

Chittenden, Martha (I13682)

4483 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Martha is identified in the will of her father, Richard Kimball of Ipswich, 5 Mar 1674/5, proved 28 Sep 1675 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 3:16-19 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). Martha's year of birth is calculated from age 5 on the passenger list of the ship "Elizabeth," 30 Apr 1634 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 [Baltimore, 1987], 114-15 [FHL #973 W2col]).
MAR: No mar rec found. Joseph Fowler called Richard Kimball "father-in-law" in deed of 12 Jan 1650 (Ipswich Deeds, 1:89 [FHL #873018]). Joseph's wife was Martha as evidenced by court rec, 10 Oct 1651, "Martha, wife of Joseph Fowlar, fined for lying" (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:224 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). Hence, it appears that Martha, dau of Richard Kimball, married Joseph Fowler.

4486 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Mary is identified as "my daughter Goodrich" in the will of her mother, Elizabeth (Foote) Welles of Wethersfield, 28 Mar 1678, no probate act, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNETICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:379-81 (FHL #974.6 P2m). The given name of this dau is deduced as Mary from a bequest in the will to a grandson, John Stoddard. John was born at Wethersfield, 12 Apr 1646, the son of John and Mary Stoddard ("Wethersfield Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1634-1868," Barbour Collection [typescript, 1927; Conn. State Library, Hartford], 252 [FHL #002982]). John Stoddard, Sr, was dead by 20 Dec 1664, when his inv was taken, and widow Mary was granted adm of the estate, 2 Mar 1664/5. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:241-42. On 4 Apr 1679 John Goodrich and Mary Stoddard, both of Wethersfield, made a pre-nuptial agreement(Wethersfield Deeds, 3:53 [FHL #005992]). Hence, Mary Foote married (1) John Stoddard, and (2) John Goodrich.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. John and Mary Stoddard are the parents of John Stoddard, called grandson in the will of Elizabeth (Foote) Welles. See discussion, above.
MAR #2: Actual mar rec not found. See pre-nuptial agreement, 4 Apr 1674, above.
MAR #3: No mar rec found. Lt. [Thomas] Tracy received an equal share with the other children of Elizabeth (Foote) Welles in the distribution of her estate in 1683. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Manwaring, DIGEST 1:380-81. Furthermore, Thomas Tracy sued the estate of John Goodrich in 21 Jan 1685, suggesting that the heirs of his wife Mary, widow of John Goodrich, had withheld part of the estate she brought into the marriage (Wethersfield Deeds, 3:230 [FHL #005992]).

4487 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Mary is identified as a dau of widow Mary Pond of Dorchester, now the wife of Edward Shephard of Cambridge, in an undated Cambridge church rec (Stephen Paschall Sharples, RECORDS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND, 1632-1830 [Boston, 1906], 7 [FHL #974.44/C1 V27s]). Although undated, the document is of early origin. Edward Shephard and Mary Pond were married abt 1648-50. Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. Robert Pond of Dorchester, deceased, is called father-in-law of John Blackman of Dorchester in a deed from Edward Shephard of Cambridge to John Blackman, 24 Feb 1650/1 (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 3:72 [FHL #493932]). John Blackman apparently married a dau of Robert Pond. Mary is the only known dau of Robert Pond old enough to have been married in 1650/1, although there may have been other children not identified. By 1659 John Blackman's wife was Sarah (RECORDS OF THE FIRST CHURCH AT DORCHESTER [Boston, 1891], 21 [orig p.32] [FHL #974.46/D1 K2r]). And they appear to have been married as early as 10 Aug 1656, when John Blackman had a son John (DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARIAGES, AND DEATHS [Boston, 1890], 4 [FHL #974.46/D1 V2r]). However, Robert Pond's dau Sarah could not have been the wife of John Balckman in 1650/1, as she was a single woman in 1657 (Suffolk Co. Probate, #172, [n.s.] 2:513-14 [FHL #594359]). The most likely explanation is that John Blackman married Mary Pond, who died between 1650/1 and 1656. There are, of course, other possibilities.

MAR: She is called Mary "Padge" in the will of her father, above. John Page and his wife "---- Mash" were married before 1653 (VITAL RECORDS OF HAVERHILL, 2 vols. [Topsfield, MA, 1910-11], 2:242 [FHL #974.45/H1 V29h]). John Page is found with a wife Mary in various documents. John and Mary sold land in Haverhill to Peter Patie, 18 Mar 1680/1 (Old Norfolk Co. Deeds, 3:2:270 [FHL #873022]). Hence, it appears that John Page married Mary Mash. Mash and Marsh were frequently interchanged among the family of George Marsh/Mash of Hingham, Mass. On 8 Aug 1678, John Page, Jr, (son of John and Mary) referred to Onesipherous Mash (son of George) as his "uncle" (Old Norfolk Co. Deeds, 3:1:229 [FHL #873021]). Hence, it is believed that John Page's wife Mary is a dau of George Marsh of Hingham. John Page was in Hingham from at least 1641 to 1651.

[Topsfield, MA, 1917-24], 1:232 [FHL #974.45/G3 V29v]). Hence, it appears that Mary, wife of Robert Dutch, is the sister of Caleb Kimball, son of Richard Kimball.

MAR: No mar rec found. On 17 Sep 1650 Daniel Killam and his wife Mary were fined for fornication, "having a child fully grown...born twenty-eight weeks after their marriage" (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:196 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). The birth of this child is not recorded at Wenham. The child was reportedly a son Daniel, born 15 May 1649 (Sidney Perley, "Killam Genealogy," ESSEX INSTITUTE HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS, 49[1913]:215 [FHL #974 B2e]). If this is accurate, the mar took place in Nov 1648. Mary is apparently the dau of Thomas Safford of Ipswich, whose will identifies daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Abigail. The depositions of John Addams and Nicholas Wallis refer to Safford's "daughter Kellum" and another dau Abie (Abigail). Since the third dau, Elizabeth, was not married when Thomas Safford made his will, the dau Kellum must have been Mary and was no doubt the wife of Daniel Killam (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX, 2:29-81).
