BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Mary was a legatee in the agreement of heirs of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, 2 Dec 1658, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:135-36 [FHL #974.6P2m]). Date and place of birth are approximations. Mary's birth in Braintree is suggested by the family's continued residence in the town from at least 1617-1635. Mary's father, Joseph Loomis, is called "of Braintree" in the will of Mary's grandfather, Robert White of Messing, 27 May 1617-20 Jun 1617, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, orig wills, 8:40 (FHL #091258). Furthermore, Joseph Loomis was a member of the Braintree parish vestry from 1619-1635 (F. G. Emmison, EARLY ESSEX TOWN MEETINGS [London, 1970], 11-50 passim (FHL #942.67 K2e). BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Mary's husband, John Woods, is called "son-in-law" in the will of John Parmenter of Roxbury, 25 Mar 1671 (29 Mar at end of will), rejected 25 Jul 1671 (two executors not appearing), Suffolk Co. Mary's year of birth is calculated from age 80 on death rec, below. This age is probably rounded off. Mary's brother John was born about the same year, according to his deposition in 1665. Mary's birth year has accordingly been adjusted to abt 1612. She was probably born in the vicinity of Little Yeldham, the Parmenter home parish, although her baptism is not recorded there.

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Matthew's birth is proved by the deposition of John Griswold and George Griswold, sons of George, and grandsons of Edward Griswold, the immigrant, Matthew's brother, dated 19 Jan 1737/8, in which it is stated that their grandfather Edward was the eldest of three brothers. The other brothers were Matthew and Thomas. Thomas was the youngest (Edward E. Salisbury and Evelyn McCurdy Salisbury, FAMILY HISTORIES AND GENEALOGIES, 3 vols. [Privately printed, 1892], 2:5 [FHL #873825]). Matthew testified in 1684 that he was about 64 years old (Connecticut Archives, "Private Controversies," 2:204, cited in Salisbury, FAMILY HISTORIES, 2:3). Hence, Matthew was born after the death of the first wife, and Thomas was younger still. The deposition of George Griswold, nephew of Matthew, dated 9 May 1700, states that as a youth he lived in Kenilworth, Warws with his father Edward Griswold in a house which belonged to his uncle Matthew Griswold (Matthew Griswold estate papers, New London District Probate Files, #2333 [FHL #1025021]).
MAR: No mar rec found in original source records. Mar date of 10 Oct 1646 is found in Henry R. Stiles, THE HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR, 2 vols. (Hartford, 1891-92), 2:800 [FHL #974.62/W1 H2s]). The mar is proved by a deed of gift from Matthew and Anna Griswold of Lyme, Conn. to their granddaughters Sarah and Anna Colton of Springfield, 3 Jun 1696, for land "which fell to us by ye decease & gift of Mr. Christopher Wolcot" (Windsor Deeds, 2:50 [FHL #006189]). This was no doubt the land bequeathed by Christopher Wolcott of Windsor to his siblings in his nuncupative will, exhibited 4 Dec 1662, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:166 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Christopher is the son of Henry Wolcott of Windsor. See the will of Henry Wolcott, 13 May 1655, proved 4 Oct 1655 (Ibid, 1:167-68). The will of Elizabeth Wolcott of Windsor, widow of Henry Wolcott, 5 Jul 1655, proved 4 Oct 1655 mentions a dau Anne (Ibid, 1:66). Hence, Anna, wife of Matthew Griswold, is a sister of Christopher and dau of Henry and Elizabeth Wolcott.

RICHARD MATHER (Hartford, 1890), 55 (FHL #186133 item 2). However, it is more likely that he was born in the nearby village of Much Woolton in the parish of Childwall. RICHARD MATHER (Cambridge, MA, 1670; repr, Dorchester, MA, 1850), 50 (FHL #1425681 item 2). This work was published under the sanction of Increase Mather, Nathaniel's brother, although professedly not written by him. Furthermore, Nathaniel's nephew, Rev. Cotton Mather wrote in 1702 that Samuel Mather, Timothy's brother, was born in Much Woolton in 1626 (Cotton Mather, MAGNALIA CHRISTI AMERICANA, 2 vols. BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. On 23 Jul 1630 Gov. John Winthrop wrote to his son John in Groton: "Commend me to old Pond, and tell him both his sons are well, and remember their duty to him. He must needs send his son John some more provisions" (John Winthrop, THE HISTORY OF NEW ENGLAND, ed James Savage, 2 vols. [Boston, 1825], 1:375 [FHL #974 H2w]). It is possible that the other son, not named, is Robert. John disappeared from New England recs and probably returned to England. Research in Groton and vicinity has identified William Pond and his sons John, William, and Joseph. No son Robert has been found, nor is Robert mentioned in William's will.
MAR: No mar rec found. Mary Pond and William Pond petitioned for the administration of the estate of Robert Pond(?) on 10 May 1648 (Nathaniel B. Widow Mary Pond was dismissed from the church at Dorchester and admitted to the Cambridge church as the wife of Edward Shephard. Entry is undated but apparently before 1650/1 (Stephen Pascall Sharples, RECORDS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND, [Boston, 1906], 7 [FHL #974.44/C1 V27s]). On 24 Feb 1650/1, Edward Shephard of Cambridge deeded land in Dorchester to John Blackman of Dorchester, "lately belonging to Robert Pond, father-in-law to the said John, deceased" (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols.
