4552 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Richard is identified in the will of his father, William Marche of Sherford, 29 Apr 1612, proved 8 Sep 1615, Archdeaconry Court of Totnes, published verbatim in George S. Terry,"Genealogical Research in England," NEHGR, 86 (1932):77-78 (FHL #974B2ne). Wills of this court were destroyed in 1942. Date and place of birth are approximations based on family history and chronology.
MAR: No mar rec found. Seven children are listed in the will of widow, Johane Marche of Sherford, 21 May 1616, proved 21 June 1616, Archdeaconry Court of Totnes (Terry, "Genealogical Research," 78). The will of William Marche, above, mentions the 7 children of his deceased son Richard and makes his dau-in-law Joane residuary legatee. That she is a Martyn is suggested by the will of her dau Elizabeth March, spinster, of Rattery, Devon, n.d., proved 14 May 1619, Archdeaconry Court of Totnes, which mentions her uncle Henry Martyn and aunt Alice Martyn (Terry, "Genealogical Research," 79).
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. Richard was deceased prior to the date of his father's will, 29 Apr 1612, above.

4553 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Richard is shown to be a son of Nicholas Derby in a chancery suit, John Every v. Christopher Derby, 22 May 1601, in which it was shown that Richard was living before 24 Jul 1576, Chancery Proceedings, series 2, 268/3, cited in G. Andrews Moriarty, "Genealogical Research in England-Derby," NEHGR, 79(1925):419 (FHL #974 B2ne).
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. Richard is not mentioned among the sons of Nicholas Derby in the latter's i.p.m., 19 May 1600, Chancery Inquisitions Post Mortem, series 2, vol. 260, no. 122 ("Genealogical Research," NEHGR, 79:416).

4554 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Robert 1st appears in Plymouth recs as a servant of Thomas Dexter, Jr, 1 Aug 1654, when he complained of abuse by his master (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1855-61], 3:63-64 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). Robert took the oath of fidelity at Plymouth in 1657 (Ibid, 8:181). He probably arrived at age 21 that year, suggesting a birth year about 1636.
MAR: No mar rec found. There is considerable confusion concerning the given name of Robert's wife, largely due to contradictory statements in his estate recs, below. Robert's widow Susannah was granted adm of the estate, but it was his widow Abigail who made oath to the inventory. However, "Goodwife Ransom," no doubt Robert's wife is mentioned in the inv of estate of John Tilson of Scituate, 31 Oct 1673. Abigail Ransom, aged about 36 years, testified concerning Tilson's nuncupative will (Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:78, 93 [FHL #567794]). Robert Ransom's wife was apparently Abigail.
DEATH: Date of death is from inv of estate. See the adm of estate of Robert Ransom of Plymouth, 22 Dec 1697, inv sworn 22 Dec 1697, Plymouth Co. Probate, 1:279-80 (FHL #550708).

4555 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Robert identified William Pond as his brother in his will, below. William is almost certainly a son of Robert Pond by reason of William's petition to the General Court with the widow Mary Pond for adm of Robert Pond's estate on 10 May 1648 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 2:246 [FHL #974.4 N2s]). Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Mary is identified in his will, below. She is called Mary Ball of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk in James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 4 vols. (Boston, 1860-62; repr Baltimore, 1965), 3:453 (FHL #974 D2s). No evidence has yet been found to support this claim unless the John "Bull," brother-in-law, mentioned in Robert's will is his wife's brother.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of Robert Pond of Milton, 19 Oct 1662, proved 13 May 1663, inv 24 Dec 1662, Suffolk Co. Probate, #339, (n.s.) 2:288-91 (FHL #594359).

4556 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Robert is identified as a 17-yr-old son in the inv and distribution of the estate of Nathaniel Foote of Wethersfield, 20 Nov 1644, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:12 (FHL #974.6 P2m).
MAR: No mar rec found. Robert Foote had children born at New Haven, 1660-1668 (VITAL RECORDS OF NEW HAVEN, 2 vols. [Hartford, 1917], 1:17, 18, 21, 23, 27 [FHL #974.68 V2v]). Two additional children were born at Branford in 1670 and 1672 ("Branford Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1644-1850," Barbour Collection [typescript, 1924; Conn. State Library, Hartford], 52 [FHL #002967]). No wife is mentioned in these birth records, but she is most probably the Sarah Blackley "alias Foot alias Potter," dau of William Potter of New Haven, late deceased, who receipted for her share of her father's estate, 23 Aug 1706 (New Haven Deeds, 5:130 [FHL #005229]).

4564 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Robert was probably born in Stanstead Abbot, where pre-1678 par regs are lost. He is identified as a son of Thomas Burnap of Stanstead Abbots by circumstantial evidence. Robert called Thomas Burnap "cousin" in his will, below. Thomas Burnap of Reading, Mass. is a proved son of Rev. John Burnap of Aston, Herts whose will (30 Mar 1653, proved 10 Mar 1654) mentions a son Thomas in New England (P.C.C., 193 Alchin [FHL #092200]). Rev. John Burnap is proved to be a son of Thomas Burnap of Stanstead Abbots by the former's 1606 rec of admission to Caius College, Cambridge (John Venn and J. A. Venn, ALUMNICANTABRIGIENSES, pt. 1, 4 vols. [Cambridge, 1922-27], 1:260 [FHL #942.59/C1 J2c]). Since Thomas Burnap of Stanstead Abbot was the only surviving son of his own father, the only way to make Robert a "cousin" to Thomas Burnap of Reading is to make Robert the son of Thomas of Stanstead Abbots and the brother of Rev. John of Aston. This would actually make Robert the uncle of Thomas, but cousin was then used to mean any degree of relationship more distant than brother/sister, father/mother, or son/daughter. Robert's grandfather, Thomas Burnap of Stanstead Abbots, mentions his grandsons in his will, dated Jan 1593. As Robert is not mentioned, it is assumed that he was not yet born. If he was born about 1595 it would be consistent with the age of 58 years given in a deposition, 26 Oct 1653 (Massachusetts Archives, 38B:166, cited in Henry Wyckoff Belknap, THE BURNAP-BURNETT GENEALOGY [Salem, MA, 1925], 22 [FHL #896923]).
MAR: No mar rec found. Ann, wife of Robert Burnap, Sr, consented to a deed from Isaac Burnap's heirs to Elias Pakemen, 19 Jan 1668 (Essex Co. Deeds, 3:47-48 [FHL #866015]). Ann is apparently the dau of Thomas Miller of Bishop's Stortford, Herts who mentions "my grandchild" Thomas Burnapin his will, 17 May 1627, no probate act, Commissary Court of the Bishop of London (Essex & Herts Div), orig wills, box 48, #22 (FHL #094414).

[Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:29 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). Since he is not mentioned in the will of his grandfather, John Davis of Acton Turville, Gloucs, dated Apr 1625, with the other children of James Davis, it is presumed that he was born after the will was made.

Samuel's birth in Braintree is suggested by the family's continued residence in the town from at least 1617-1635. Samuel's father, Joseph Loomis, is called "of Braintree" in the will Samuel's grandfather, Robert White of Messing, 27 May 1617-20 Jun 1617, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, orig wills, 8:40 (FHL #091258). 4586 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Sarah identified herself as a sister to Jonathan Pond in a deposition, 19 Nov 1657, in Jonathan Pond's estate recs, Suffolk Co. Probate, #172, (n.s.) 2:513-14 (FHL #594359). Jonathan is almost certainly a son of Robert Pond of Dorchester. The difficulty in this relationship lies in the age of "neere 17 years" recorded for Sarah in the above deposition. If accurate, her age calculates to an approximate birth year of 1640, three years after the death of her supposed father. Nevertheless, as the evidence is strong that Jonathan is Robert's son, it is believed that Sarah's age is a clerical error. Another possibility is that she is an illegitimate dau of the widow Mary Pond.
