4652 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Thomas is identified in the will of his father, Richard Lord of Towcester, 30 May 1610, proved 7 Feb 1610/11, Archdeaconry Court of Northampton, reg wills, XYZ:74 (FHL #187592). Date of birth is calculated from age 50 on passenger list of the ship "Elizabeth & Ann," in 1635 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 [Baltimore, 1987], 135 [FHL #973 W2col]).
MAR: Towcester par reg, as cited in Kenneth Lord, GENEALOGY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS LORD (New York, 1946), 2 (FHL #929.273 L884Lka).
DEATH: No death rec found. Thomas is last of record in Hartford on 29 Jan 1643/4 (Lord, GENEALOGY OF THOMAS LORD, 2). He probably died soon after, but he was certainly dead by 1651 when his wife Dorothy appeared in Hartford records as a land owner (HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT LAND RECORDS: 1639-1688 AND BIRTHS MARRIAGES AND DEATHS: 1644-1730, Albert C. 4653 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Thomas is identified in the will of his father, Robert Burnap of Reading, 15 Nov 1688, proved 1 Oct 1689, Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #3608 (FHL #386046). He is also mentioned in the will of his maternal grandfather, Thomas Miller of Bishops Stortford, 17 May 1627, no probate act, Commissary Court of the Bishop of London (Essex & Herts Div), orig wills, box 48, #22 (FHL #094414). Therefore, Thomas was born before 1627 and must have been born before the birth of his sister Ann in 1626.
MAR: VITAL RECORDS OF LYNN, 2 vols. (Salem, MA, 1905-1906), 2:77 (FHL #547549 item 2). The mar is also recorded in Reading vital recs, same date, but Mary's surname is omitted (Thomas W. Baldwin, comp, VITAL RECORDS OF READING [Boston, 1912], 300 [FHL #974.44/R1 V2b]).
DEATH: Ibid, 505. Also see the adm of estate of Thomas Burnap of Reading, 7 Jul 1691, inv 26 Mar 1691, petition of heirs 7 Apr 1691, Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #3614 (FHL #386046).
NOTE: Do not confuse this Thomas Burnap with his cousin Thomas who died in Reading on 15 Apr 1691. The latter's estate recs show that he was aged about 60 years when he died; hence, he was no doubt the son of John Burnap of Aston, Herts, whose will mentions son Thomas in New England. This Thomas was baptized at Aston, 30 Jun 1630, and is called "cousin" in the will of Robert Burnap of Reading.

MAR: Bengeworth par reg (FHL #383530). The wife is called "Agnes" Dacle on mar rec, but this seems to be a clerical error. She is referred to as Margaret in the will of her father and on her bur rec. Furthermore, a chr rec exists for Margaret Dacle but not Agnes.

Date of birth is calculated from age 14 on passenger list of the ship "Francis" of Ipswich, 30 Apr 1634. See Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 (Baltimore, 1987), 114 (FHL #973 W2col). Place of birth is almost certainly Bocking, where his parents married in 1618 and where his sister Elizabeth was bur in 1625. Christenings are missing from the fragmentary par reg for the period 1606-1654.
MAR #1: Springfield Vital Records, 1:13 (FHL #185414).

4662 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Thomas was a legatee in the agreement of heirs of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, 2 Dec 1658, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:135-36 [FHL #974.6 P2m]). Date and place of birth are approximations. Thomas's birth in Braintree is suggested by the family's continued residence in the town from at least 1617-1635. Thomas's father, Joseph Loomis, is called "of Braintree" in the will of Thomas's grandfather, Robert White of Messing, 27 May 1617-20 Jun 1617, Archdeaconry Court of Colchester, orig wills, 8:40 (FHL #091258). Furthermore, Joseph Loomis was a member of the Braintree parish vestry from 1619-1635 (F. G. Emmison, EARLY ESSEX TOWN MEETINGS [London, 1970], 11-50 passim (FHL #942.67 K2e). Additional evidence is found in Elias Loomis, DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH LOOMIS IN AMERICA, rev by Elisha S. Loomis (New Haven, CT, 1875; rev edition Fresno, CA, 1981), 21-22 (FHL #929.273 L873Le).

4663 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Thomas was aged 18 yrs on 16 Mar 1634/5 when he embarked on the ship "Christian" from London. He was indentured to Francis Stiles, also on the "Christian," formerly of Co. Bedford but lately of London. Hence, Cooper was probably from the London area. For further discussion, see Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, HALE, HOUSE AND RELATED FAMILIES (Hartford, 1952), 497 (FHL #929.273 H15j). Another theory is that he was baptized on 29 Aug 1619 at Stratford-on-Avon, Warws. For arguments in favor of this theory, see Agnes Thomson Cooper and John Bradley Cooper, BEGINNINGS: THOMAS COOPER OF SPRINGFIELD (Baltimore, 1987), 225 (FHL #929.273 C788c).
MAR: No mar rec found. The widow Sarah Cooper administered the estate of Thomas Cooper of Springfield, 29 Mar 1676, below. The will of Capt. Robert Slye of St. Mary's Co., Maryland, 18 Jan 1670, proved 13 Mar 1670, mentions "nephews" Timothy and Thomas Cooper of Springfield, known children of Thomas and Sarah Cooper (Maryland Provincial Wills, 1:422 [FHL #012841]). Hence, Sarah appears to be the sister of Robert Slye. For additional information, see Clarence A. Torrey, "Cooper-Slye and Cooper-Glover Problems," TAG 23(1946):95-97 (FHL #973 D25aga), and George Ely Russell, "Slye-Cooper-Russell Connections," TAG, 7(1981):92-94.
DEATH: Springfield Vital Records, 1:49 (FHL #185414). Also see the adm of estate of Thomas Cooper of Springfield, 29 Mar 1676, Hampshire Co. Thomas Cooper was killed by the Indians in the attack on Springfield, 5 Oct 1675. Contemporary accounts of his death are found in a letter from John Pynchon to Gov. John Leverett, 8 Oct 1675, "The Pynchon Papers," PUBLICATIONS OF THE COLONIAL SOCIETY OF MASSACHUSETTS, 1(1982):160-62 (BYU #F61.C71); also Samuel G. However, it is more likely that he was born in the nearby village of Much Woolton in the parish of Childwall. It is stated that Richard removed to Much Woolton after his mar in 1624 in THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE REVEREND MAN OF GOD, MR. RICHARD MATHER (Cambridge, MA, 1670; repr, Dorchester, MA, 1850), 50 (FHL #1425681 item 2). Steven Bachiler.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. See letter from Stephen Bachiler of London to his brother Nathaniel Bachiler of Hampton, NH, 23 Apr 1685, published verbatim in William H. See deed from Stephen Bachiler of Strawberry Bank (Portsmouth, NH) to his grandsons, 20 Apr 1647 (New Hampshire Province Deeds, 13:221 [FHL #015415]). 4672 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Wherwell par regs are lost for the period. No evidence has been found to prove that Deborah is a dau of Stephen Bachiler, but it has been frequently published since 1860 if not earlier. See James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 4 vols. (Boston, 1860-62; repr Baltimore, 1965), 4:594 (FHL #974 D2s). Although unproved, the relationship seems probable. John and Deborah Wing lived in Strood, Kent, where they had two children baptized: Deborah, 12 Oct 1609; John, 1 Sep 1611 (Strood par reg [FHL #992462]). The will of Rev. John Wing, "late of the Hague in Holland, clerk, now living in St. Mary Aldermary, London," 2 Nov 1629, proved 4 Aug 1630, mentions his wife Deborah and refers to land in Strood, Kent (P.C.C., Scroope, 73 [FHL #092122]). The widow Ann Sanborn, dau of Stephen Bachiler, married Henry Atkinson in Strood, 20 Jan 1631/2. Like Stephen Bachiler, John Wing was a Puritan. Deborah and her children came to New England and settled in Sandwich. Among the children was a son Stephen. Also like Stephen Bachiler, John and Deborah Wing had connections in Holland. John Wing was a minister at The Hague, Flushing, and Middleburgh. On 22 Jun 1624, Deborah Wing, aged 32 yrs, wife of Mr. John Wing, resident of Flushing, and her two children, applied for a "License to Pass Beyond the Sea," apparently to return to Holland (P.R.O., Q.R. Miscell, 560-2, cited in Henry F. Waters, "Genealogical Gleanings in England," NEHGR, 45[1891]:237 [FHL #974 B2ne]). Stephen Bachiler and dau Anne Sanborn applied for a license to pass beyond the sea to visit family in Flushing on 25 Jun 1631 (Q.R. 4696 BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. William's father is unknown, but his grandfather was apparently Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling. The will of Richard Elwyn of North Walsham, 10 Aug 1583, proved 2 Sep 1583, shows that Richard is the brother of John and William Elwyn of Heigham (Consistory Court of Norwich, reg wills, 83:126 [FHL #094991]). The will of brother John Ellwyn of Heigham, 31 Dec 1598, proved Oct 1600, mentions his cousin Peter Barker, citizen and alderman of Norwich (Ibid, 96:166 [FHL #094923]). The will of Rev. John Elwyn of St. Michael's in Coslany, Norwich, 19 Mar 1568/9, proved 13 Sep 1569, mentions the children of Thomas Barker including the son Peter, then under 21 (Ibid, 76:228 [FHL #094904]). Rev. John Elwyn is the son of Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling, the testator of 1556. In summary, the wills of the brothers of William Elwin of Heigham show a connection to Peter Elwyn through the Barker family. Hence, it is believed that William is the son of an unknown son of Peter Elwyn who died before the latter's will was written in 1556. The will of Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling, 16 Jun 1556, proved 27 Sep 1557, mentions a grandson William Elwyn the younger, who is apparently this William (Consistory Court of Norwich, reg wills, 63:151 [FHL #094894]).
