Date of birth is calculated from age 22 on passenger list of the ship "Elizabeth" from London, 1635 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 [Baltimore, 1987], 134 [FHL #973 W2col]). Most of the passengers on the "Elizabeth" were from London and nearby parishes in adjacent counties. John may be the son of James Clough, chr at St. Botolph without Aldgate, London, 20 Apr 1614.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of John Clough and his wife "Jone" were born in Salisbury, 1642-56. The wife's name is often published as Jane, but a deed from John Clough to Henry Wheeler, 12 Apr 1664, clearly shows that his wife was Joanna, i.e. Joan (Old Norfolk Co. Deeds, 3:270 [FHL #873020]).

BIRTH: Proof that Matthew is a son of Edward comes from circumstantial evidence that he is a brother of Samuel Fuller, a proved son of Edward. On 3 Jun 1662 Matthew Fuller was included on a list of "the first born children" of Plymouth Colony who were to receive a grant of land. Those on the list were the sons of "Mayflower" passengers and others who arrived in the colony before 1627. Matthew arrived well after this date, but Edward Fuller was a "Mayflower" passenger. Furthermore, on 29 Jun 1673, Matthew Fuller and Samuel Fuller made complaint against Steven Skiff, et al. An agreement was reached, and John Fuller (son of Matthew) stated that he "doth aquiessey in this agreement of his unkells and Steven Skiffes..." (Plymouth Colony Deeds, 2:1:21 [FHL #567789]). The implication is that Matthew's son John is a nephew of Samuel Fuller; hence Matthew and Samuel are brothers. For additional information, see Bruce Campbell MacGunnigle, "Was Matthew Fuller of Plymouth Colony a Son of Pilgrim Edward Fuller?," TAG, 61(1986):194-99 (FHL #973 D25aga). Matthew Fuller is not mentioned in colony records until 1640 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1855-61], 6:18-19 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). It is presumed that he remained in England, coming over to join his family at a later date. Date and place of birth are approximations.
