BIRTH: The birth year of Richard Currier is calculated from age 47 given on deposition, 12 Apr 1664 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 3:253 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). He also deposed at age 65, 24 Mar 1682 (Ibid, 8:251). Richard was no doubt born in England.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of Richard Currier and his wife Ann were born at Salisbury, Mass., 1643-46. Earlier children were born but not recorded in vital recs.
MAR #2: VITAL RECORDS OF AMESBURY (Topsfield, MA, 1913), 327 (FHL #974.45/A1 V2a). Wife is called "widow Sargent" on mar rec. She is apparently the widow of William Sargent, whose will was proved 13 Apr 1675 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:438-41 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). William Sargent's wife was Joanna, widow of Valentine Rowell, and dau of Henry Pinder. William Sargent and Joanna Rowell were married, 18 Sep 1670 (VITAL RECORDS OF AMESBURY, 476). Valentine Rowell and Joanna Pinder were married 14 Nov 1643 (VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY [Topsfield, MA, 1915], 472 [FHL #974.45/S3 V2t]).

BIRTH: The children of William Smith of Farmington are identified by name and age in his inv of estate, 6 Jan 1669, Hartford, Conn. District Probate, 3:69 (FHL #004572). Benjamin was listed as being 11 yrs old in Apr 1669. Place of birth was almost certainly Farmington where the family is of record, 1655-1678.
CHR: Farmington 1st Congregational Church recs, 1:52 (FHL #004241). The given name appears to have been written later in pencil.

BIRTH: The existence of a son Philip is problematic. While it is possible that Philip is identical to the older Philip born on 19 Dec 1657, the order in which the sons are listed in the settlement of the estate of his father, Philip Watson-Challis of Amesbury, 27 Sep 1681, suggests he was born between William (1663) and Thomas (1673). See THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. (Salem, MA, 1916-20), 3:418-19 (FHL #974.45 P2p). The will of Philip's grandfather, William Sargent of Amesbury, 24 March 1670/1, proved 13 Apr 1675, appears to name the children of Philip Watson-Challis in birth order. Philip is listed after Mary, who was born in 1668 (Ibid, 2:438-40). Hence, it is most probable that Philip was born in Amesbury between 1668 and 1670/1.

BIRTH: The existence of this unknown son of Peter Elwyn is suggested by several documents, which combined show that a branch of Peter's family settled in Heigham and North Walsham. The evidence is detailed in G. Andrews Moriarty, "The Elwyns of Norfolk," MISCELLANEA GENEALOGICA ET HERALDICA, ed A. W. Hughes Clarke, 5th series, 6(1926-28):20-32 (FHL #942 B2m). Moriarty suggests the connection between the Heigham and Wooddalling Elwyns "is proved by the reference on the one hand in the will of Peter's son, Rev. John Elwyn of St. Michael's Coslany [Norwich], in 1568, to Peter Barker, evidently a great nephew, and of Peter Elwyn of Thurning in his will in 1607 to Thomas Barker (the brother of Peter) as his 'kinsman,' and on the other hand by the reference in the will of John Elwyn of Heigham in 1598 to his 'cousin Mr. Peter Barker, citizen and Alderman of Norwich.' The will of Richard Elwyn of North Walsham in 1583 proves that William and John Elwyn of Heigham and he were brothers. "Hence, it appears that Peter had a son who died before his will was written in 1556. The will of Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling, 16 Jun 1556, proved 27 Sep 1557, mentions a grandson William Elwyn the younger, who is believed to be William of Heigham, the son of this unknown son of Peter(Consistory Court of Norwich, reg wills, 63:151 [FHL #094894]).

BIRTH: The identification of William as a son of Richard by an unknown 1st wife is based on circumstantial evidence. William's son Roger, who emigrated to New England, is called "cousin" in the will of another New England immigrant, John Clapp of Dorchester, 11 Jul 1655, proved 30 Aug 1655, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (o.s.) 1:111 (FHL #584127). John Clapp is a proved son of Nicholas Clapp. John's will mentions several brothers, nieces, and nephews who are mentioned in the will of Nicholas Clapp of Venn Ottery, Devon, 12 Mar 1631/2, proved 29 Mar 1632, Archdeaconry Court of Exeter. The wills of this court were destroyed in 1942. See transcript in Mary Lovering Holman, THE SCOTT GENEALOGY (Boston, 1919), 227-28 (FHL #929.273 Sco84h). Nicholas and William Clapp are apparently brothers. Nicholas is mentioned in the will of his mother, Christian Clapp of Sidbury, Devon, 25 Jul 1608, proved 12 Aug 1608, Court of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, abstracted in Olive M. Moger, "Transcript of Devonshire Wills," 44 vols. (typescript, n.d.), 9:1210 (FHL #916870). William is not mentiond in the will of Christian Clapp, who is the widow of Richard Clapp. It appears that William is from an earlier, unknown wife of Richard. Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: W. I. Leeson, ed, "Sidmouth Parish Register" (transcript, 1941; Devon & Cornwall Record Society), unpaginated (FHL #916935). William was "of Salcome." The wife is a "daughter of Robert Channon."

BIRTH: The will of Thomas Godbold of Badingham, 20 Dec 1541, proved 31 Jan 1541, shows that he is the brother of Anne, wife of William Crispe of Laxfield, and Roger Godbold of Dennington (Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 14:158 [FHL #096914]). The key to the father of these three is the tenement "Jaffreys," which was bequeathed by William Godbold of Dennington to his son Thomas in 1504 in exchange for his son's support for life. See the will of William Godbold of Dennington, 4 Apr 1504, proved 14 Dec 1507, Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 6:10 (FHL #096909). In 1552 Jaffreys was willed by Roger Godbold's son, William Godbold of Dennington, to his own son Roger. See the will of William Godbold of Dennington, 27 Aug 1552, proved 9 Feb 1552/3, Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk, reg wills, 16:418 (FHL #096916). It is not clear how Jaffreys descended to William, son of Roger, but it must have been through Thomas Godbold, who received it in 1504. It is believed, therefore, that Thomas is the father of the three siblings, Anne, Thomas, and Roger Godbold. Date and place of Roger's birth is an approximation.

BIRTH: There is no proof that Elizabeth is the daughter of John and Edith Tilley. However, there is considerable circumstantial evidence. Investigation of all known Tilley families in New England during the period finds no other family into which Elizabeth could fit. Furthermore, after the death of John Tilley in Oct 1636, the widow Edith was granted land in Windsor, where she took up residence. See Windsor Deeds, 1:25, 30, 51, 53, 77, 112 (FHL #006188). Thomas Merrick, who was once a resident of Connecticut, was, at the time of his marriage, freighting goods from Springfield to Windsor for John Pynchon (Carl Bridenbaugh, ed, THE PYNCHON PAPERS, 2 vols. Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, vols. 60 and 61 [Boston, 1982], 2:23, 200 [BYU #F61.C71]). No other Tilley family was in close proximity to Springfield. The date and place of birth of Elizabeth Tilley are approximations based on family chronology and history. BIRTH: There is no proof that John is a son of Nicholas, but he is generally accepted as such because of his age, the rarity of the Lobdell name, and his appearance in Hingham, where Nicholas Lobdell resided. Date and place of birth are approximations. See Douglas Richardson, "Nicholas Lobdell, Founder of the New England Lobdell Family," TAG, 54(1978):35-37 (FHL #973 D25aga). That he is a brother if Isaac Lobdell is suggested by a deed from Isaac Lobdell of Hull to John Lobdell of Hull, 12 May 1670 (Suffolk Co. Deeds, 6:190 [FHL #493933]). Also see the will of John Lobdell, below, which was witnessed by Isaac Lobdell.
MAR #1: "Hobart's Journal" [Rev. Peter Hobart, et al], unpaginated (FHL #423526). Wife is called Hannah "Leavitt"; however John's will and estate records, below, idientify his father-in-law as "John Leverett."
MAR #2: "Hobart's Journal." Date of mar is given, but wife's name is missing. The will of John Lobdell, below, mentions his "father Bosworth," and the inv states Nathaniel Bosworth paid for "my sons buriall." The will of Nathaniel Bosworth, of Bristol, Mass. (now RI), 15 Mar 1689/90-20 Nov 1690, mentions a dau Mary (no surname), and later in the document Mary Lobdell is mentioned without indicating a relationship (Bristol Co. Probate, 1:26-27 [FHL #461882). It is believed, therefore, that John Lobdell's 2nd wife was Mary, dau of Nathaniel Bosworth.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of John Lobdell of Hull, 26 Oct 1673, proved 7 Nov 1673, inv 3 Nov 1673, Suffolk Co., Mass. Probate, #668, (o.s.) 7:339 (FHL #584128).

BIRTH: There is no proof that Mary is a dau of Ellis Barron, but there were no other Barron families in Watertown where Mary was married in 1650, and she was the right age to fit into the family. The will of Ellis Barron of Watertown, 26 Oct 1676, proved 19 Dec 1676, mentions 7 children, but only identifies 3 by name (Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #1291 [FHL #386014]). Three others are proved by other sources, leaving only one child of Ellis Barron unproved. There seems to be little doubt that Mary is the unidentified child. Birth date is an approximation.

BIRTH: There is no proof that Samuel is a son of Richard and Ursula Fellows. However, there is strong circumstantial evidence. The family of Richard Fellows is the only known family of this surname in western Mass. during the 17th century. Samuel Fellows and Richard Fellows, a proved son of Richard and Ursula, were together fined by the Hampshire Co. Court on 27 Sep 1670. Samuel Fellows was again presented to the court on 28 Mar 1671 along with Joseph Leonard, a son-in-law of Richard and Ursula Fellows, for the "selling of strong liquors to ye Indians & for buying beaver of ye Indians without license." (Hampshire Co. Court recs, 1:123 [FHL #879185]).
DEATH: Samuel was living on 28 Mar 1671 when he was fined by the Hampshire Co. Court, above. He was probably dead by 4 Sep 1688, when his mother made her will, in which he does appear (Hampshire Co. Probate, 2:64 [FHL #879184]).

He is no doubt the Thomas Freame apprenticed to Grace Smith at Bristol and bound for New England, 23 Feb 1670 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1661-1699 [Baltimore, 1990], 157 [FHL #973 W2col]). However, he is probably not the Thomas Freame baptized at Minsterworth, Gloucs, 4 Nov 1649, as suggested by John B. Threlfall, "Probable English Origin of Thomas Freame of Amesbury," TAG, 55(1979):44-45 (FHL #973 D25aga). It was probably this Thomas whose burial is recorded in Minsterworth par reg, 13 May 1675 (FHL #091533). Nevertheless, it is likely that he did come from Gloucs, where the name is prevalent.
