BIRTH: Valentine is called 3rd son in the will of his father, Robert Austin of Adisham, 23 Nov 1544, proved 5 Jan 1544/5, Consistory Court of Canterbury, reg wills, 19:38 (FHL #188842). Date and place of birth are approximations. Valentine was probably born in Wickhambreux, which is identified as the origin of the family in the Boteler MS, cited in "Wills and Notices of Austen of Kent," MISCELLANEA GENEALOGICA ET HERALDICA, new series, 2(1877):339 (FHL #942 B2m).

Three different baptisms of children named Valentine Austen are recorded in Adisham par reg in 1547, 1548 and 1551/2. No parents names are given in any of these entries, and it has not been possible to determine which of these is the son of Richard Austen. BIRTH: VITAL RECORD OF AMESBURY (Topsfield, MA, 1913), 48 (FHL #974.45/A1 V2a).
MAR: No mar rec found. On 26 Jul 1703 Joseph Dow of Salisbury, with the consent of his wife Hannah, sold land in Amesbury to John Kelly, which was granted to his "father" Philip Watson-Challis (Essex Co. Deeds, 19:47 [FHL #866023]). Joseph was previously married to Mary, dau of Philip Watson-Challis. However, on 5 Mar 1734/5, John Challis, son of Philip, deeded land in Salisbury to the children of Joseph and Hannah Dow, late of Salisbury, deceased, for maintaining and supporting their aged parents during their long illness (Ibid, 70:178 [FHL #866044]). As no other reason is evident for John to deed land to the children of Joseph and Hannah, it is believed that Joseph Dow married sisters Mary and Hannah, the daughters of Philip Watson-Challis. Hannah was, therefore, the sister of John Challis.

NOTE: It is possible that Thomas Freame had another dau Mary who married John Colby and William Huntington, while the above Mary died young. William Huntington had a dau Judith by wife Mary in 1727, making the mother, if this Mary, 52 yrs old. Her mar to John Colby would have been at age 27.
