BIRTH: William is identified in the will of his father, Joseph Worcester of Rugby, 10 Feb 1644/5, proved 16 June 1646, P.C.C., 76 Twisse (FHL #092, 160). Clues to the origin of William Worcester are found in his will, cited above, which calls Edward French of Salisbury, Mass. his "brother." Edward French married Anne, dau of Joseph Worcester of Rugby. Moreover, William's connections to West Haddon, Northamptonshire are suggested by his certificate of ordination as vicar of Olney, Bucks on 26 Jul 1624. His sureties were Peter Worcester, merchant tailor of St. Edmunds Lombard St., London, and Ralph Pavier of St. Stephen's in Coleman St., London, merchant tailor (J. Fox Worcester, THE DESCENDANTS OF REV. WILLIAM WORCESTER, revised by Sarah Alice Worcester [Boston, 1914], xi [FHL #1033602 item 4]). Peter Worcester was probably from West Haddon. On 7 May 1617, Peter apprenticed Thomas Worcester, son of Thomas Worcester of West Haddon (Merchant Taylor's Co. Apprentice Book, 1617-20, MF315/8A, by corr, Guildhall Library, London). Ralph Pavier was from Oxenden, near West Haddon. The name Worcester is common in the surviving par regs of West Haddon, but the regs are lost before 1653. Date of birth is estimated from his probable age at marriage, abt 1627, and his probable age at admission to Cambridge University in 1620. See John Venn and J. A. Venn, ALUMNI CANTABRIGIENSES, pt. 1, 4 vols. (Cambridge, 1922-27), 4:463 (FHL #942.59/C1 J2c).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. BTs of Olney, Bucks missing for 1627/8. Children of William and Sarah Worcester were born in Salisbury, 1641-49. Wife's name is not included on entries of older children baptized at Olney.
MAR #2: VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY (Topsfield, MA, 1915), 520 (FHL #974.45/S3 V2t). Wife is called Rebecca "Hall" on mar rec. She was the widow John Hall and Henry Bylie. The will of William Worcester mentions his wife's former husband, John Hall. Rebecca Swayne married Henry Bylie, one of the original proprietors of Salisbury, Mass., at Salisbury St. Edmund, Wilts, 21 Jan 1632/3 (par reg, [FHL #1279311]). She married 2nd at Salisbury, 3 Apr 1641 to John Hall (Ibid, 385). Note that William Worcester mentioned his "daughter-in-law" [step daughter] Rebecca Bylie in his will, below.
DEATH: VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY, 634. Also see the will of William Worcester of Salisbury, 18 Oct [1662], proved 2 Dec 1662 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:403-406 [FHL #974.45 P2p]).
