CHR: Bethersden BTs [ATs] by corr, 23 Aug 1974, J. Grant Stevenson. Entry gives only year "1762." This apparently came from the Archdeacon's Transcripts, as shown by a search of ATs on m/film (FHL #1751588 item 3). BTs of Bethersden include the entire date as indicated except parents are listed as "Thomas" (sic) and Mary (FHL #1736525 item 1). Parents were given as John and Mary on Archdeacon's series, which is no doubt correct.

MAR: No mar rec found. John Dickinson had a wife Frances by whom he had a child born at Wethersfield in 1648 ("Wethersfield Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1634-1868," Barbour Collection [typescript, 1927; Conn. State Library, Hartford], 95 [FHL #002982]). Frances is apparently the dau of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Foote of Wethersfield. Frances, widow of John Dickinson, and her 2nd husband, Francis Barnard of Hadley, made a pre-nuptial agreement, 20 Aug 1677 (Hampshire Co. Deeds [Springfield Reg], A:87 [FHL #844486]). The distribution of the Nathaniel Foote estate provided for a dau Frances, aged 15 yrs. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:12 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Nathaniel Foote's widow, Elizabeth, married Gov. Thomas Welles. The will of widow Elizabeth Welles of Wethersfield, 28 Mar 1678, no probate act, mentions my "daughter Barnard," and Francis Barnard received a portion in the estate distribution. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:379-81. Hence, Frances Foote married (1) John Dickinson, and (2) Francis Barnard.
DEATH: John was killed by the Indians at the Battle of Turner's Falls during King Philip's War. The official account and casualty list are found in George M. Bodge, SOLDIERS IN KING PHILIP'S WAR (Boston, 1906; repr Baltimore, 1991), 241-47 (FHL #974 M2b). Also see the adm of estate of John Dickinson of Hadley, 26 Sep 1676, inv 19 Sep 1676, agreement of heirs 10 Jan 1676/7, additional settlement 26 Mar 1678 and 8 Mar 1698/9, Hampshire Co. MAR #1: No mar rec found. Nathaniel had a wife Hannah, the earliest mention of whom is in the bur rec of their son Nathaniel, 25 Dec 1662 ("Hampshire Records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths," [private ms John Pynchon], entries for Hadley, p. 223 [FHL #014766]). Hannah died at Hatfield, 23 Feb 1679 ("Births, Marriages, and Deaths [Hampshire] County Court," entries for Hatfield, p. 110 [FHL #760648]). She is identified in the distribution of estate of her brother, John Beardsley of Stratfield, Conn., 22 Mar 1718/9, Fairfield District Probate Files, #481 (FHL #1018732).
MAR #2: "Births, Marriages, and Deaths [Hampshire] County Court," entries for Hatfield, p. 105. The wife is called Elizabeth "Gillitt," but she is apparently the widow of Joseph Gillet who married Elizabeth Hawks at Hadley, 24 Nov 1664 (Ibid, entries for Hadley, p. 70). Elizabeth died at Hatfield, 11 Oct 1681 (Ibid, entries for Hatfield, 110).
MAR #3: Northampton Vital Records, 1:101 (FHL #186161). This may be the same marriage referred to in "Births, Marriages, and Deaths [Hampshire] County Court," Hatfield, p. 105, for Nathaniel Dickinson and Elizabeth "Wyat," 14 Oct 1684 (a month after the above). Nevertheless, Nathaniel clearly married the widow Elizabeth "Wright," as his will, below, mentions the children of his wife by her "husband Wright." She is apparently the Elizabeth Burt who married Samuel Wright at Springfield, 24 Nov 1653 (Springfield Vital Records, 1:13 [FHL #186414]). Samuel Wright died before 29 Mar 1676 when Elizabeth administered his estate (Hampshire Co. Probate 1:170 [FHL #879184]].

William Gull and Elizabeth Smith were married after 1655, when Nathaniel Foote, Elizabeth's 1st husband died at Wethersfield, Conn.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of William Gull of Hatfield, 12 Apr 1701, proved 18 Dec 1701, agreement of heirs 4 Jul 1690, receipt of stepson Nathaniel Foote 19 Jan 1686, inv 25 Dec 1701, Hampshire Co. Probate, 3:83-86 (FHL #879184).

MAR: No mar rec found. Joseph's widow, Phebe, is mentioned in his estate recs, below. She was apparently the sister of Thomas Bracey and John Bracey, both of Wethersfield, Conn. On 26 Apr 1661, Thomas Bracey, John Bracey, John Morray and wife Constance, and Joseph Dickinson and wife Phebe, all of Wethersfield, sold their interest in the land of their grandfather, William Bisby of London, lying at Wethersfield, to Samuel Martin. Samuel Martin and his wife Phebe of Wethersfield sold their interest in the property to Josiah Willard on 18 Feb 1661/2, Phebe being the dau of William Bisby (Wethersfield Deeds, 2:43-53 [FHL #005991]). Hence, Phebe, wife of Joseph Dickinson, is the sister of Thomas Bracey, John Bracey, and Constance Morray, and she is the dau of Phebe Martin, who was apparently previously married to a Bracey.
DEATH: Joseph Dickinson was one of 16 soldiers slain by the Indians at Northfield under Capt. Richard Beers. Official accounts of this action are found in George Madison Bodge, SOLDIERS IN KING PHILIP'S WAR (Boston, 1906; repr Baltimore, 1991), 130-33 (FHL #974 M2b). Also see the inv of estate of Joseph Dickinson of Northfield, presented 29 Mar 1676, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:172 (FHL #879184); additional inv taken 31 Mar 1685 (Ibid, 1:250).
