NOTE: Bartlett gives Robert a burial date of 28 Apr 1596 (J. Gardner Bartlett, NEWBERRY GENEALOGY [Boston, 1914], 24 [FHL #000018]). It is not known how this date was acquired, as the burial register of Yarcombe has a gap, 1592-1597. There was a Robert Newberry buried on 28 Apr 1590 (no parents listed). This is probably the burial to which Bartlett referred, but since it occurred two years before the chr, it obviously relates to some other Robert Newberry.

NOTES: Bartlett's NEWBERRY GENEALOGY incorrectly identifies Richard Newberry as the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Horsey) Newberry of Othe Francis in Netherbury, Dorset. This error was brought to the attention of Bartlett by Arthur Trego Butler in 1925 but was never acknowledged by the former. Copies of correspondence between Butler and Bartlett from the NEHGS Library, are in the possession of Clifford L. Stott.

None of the christening entries for the children of Richard Newberry and Grace Matthew include the names of parents. It is assumed that they are children of this couple because they immediately follow their marriage, and no other Newberry family is present in the parish. However, the chr of John Newberry on 2 Mar 1581/2 predates the marriage by three months. There is either confusion on the dates, Richard Newberry had a previous wife, or John belongs to another family. Bartlett placed the marriage of Richard and Grace on 15 June 1580/1 and included John in the family. The transcript of Yarcombe par reg used to confirm these dates clearly shows the marriage on 15 June 1581/2. John is not included in this family until the problem can be resolved.

MAR #1: No mar rec found. On 17 Sep 1650 Daniel Killam and his wife Mary were fined for fornication, "having a child fully grown...born twenty-eight weeks after their marriage" (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:196[FHL #974.45 P2e]). The birth of this child is not recorded at Wenham. The child was reportedly a son Daniel, born 15 May 1649 (Sidney Perley, "Killam Genealogy," ESSEX INSTITUTE HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS, 49[1913]:215 [FHL #974 B2e]). If this is accurate, the mar took place in Nov 1648. Mary is apparently the dau of Thomas Safford of Ipswich, whose will, 26 Feb 1666-26 Mar 1667, identifies daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Abigail. The depositions of John Addams and Nicholas Wallis refer to Safford's "daughter Kellum" and another dau Abie (Abigail). Since the third dau, Elizabeth, was not married when Thomas Safford made his will, the dau Kellum must have been Mary and was no doubt the wife of Daniel Killam (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:79-81 [FHL #974.45 P2p]).
MAR #2: Perley states that Daniel married (2) abt 1678 to Elizabeth, widow of Humphrey Gilbert, William Rayner, and Henry Kimball (Perley, "Killam Genealogy," 215.) Evidence is not found for this mar in original source records.
