DEATH: Rebecca Nurse was executed as a witch in the Salem witchcraft delusion of 1692. Numerous accounts of her trial and execution have been published. One contempory witness to the events in Salem was Robert Calef, whose account of Rebecca's execution was publised in his MORE WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD (London, 1700). Extracts were published in George Lincoln Burr, NARRATIVES OF THE WITCHCRAFT CASES (New York, 1914), 357-60 (BYU #E187.07 O73x vol. 18).
NOTE: Also see the petition of Rebecca's son, Samuel Nurse, for restitution from the colony for unlawfully executing his mother, dated 13 Sep 1710 ("Witchcraft [Cases], Court of Assistants, 1673-1692, and Superior Court of Judicature" [transcript, n.d.], 180-81 [FHL #877465 item 2]).

[Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:358 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). Isaac Esty, apparently the husband of Mary, called Jacob Towne "brother" in deposition, 22 Jun 1660, in the case of Henry Bartholomew v. Jacob Towne (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, 1911-75], 2:204 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). Furthermore, Isaac Esty, aged 82, petitioned the court for restitution in the wrongful death of his wife Mary, excecuted for withcraft in 1692, dated 8 Sep 1710 ("Witchcraft [Cases], Court of Assistants, 1673-1692, and Superior Court of Judicature" [transcript, n.d.], 155 [FHL #877465 item 2]). Robert Calef stated that Mary Esty and Rebecca Nurse were sisters in his MORE WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD (London, 1700), reprinted in George Lincoln Burr, NARRATIVES OF THE WITCHCRAFT CASES (New York, 1914), 367 (BYU #E187.07 O73x vol. 18). Burr was a witness to many of the events surrounding the Salem witchcraft delusion of 1692.
DEATH: Burr, NARRATIVES, 367, reprinting Calef, MORE WONDERS. Many published histories of the Salem witch trials include accounts of the trials of Mary and her sisters Rebecca Nurse and Sarah Cloyse.

MAR: No mar rec found. Sarah is identified as the wife of her cousin Nicholas Clapp of Dorchester in MEMOIRS OF ROGER CLAP (Boston, 1844), originally published in Boston, 1731, Appendix by James Blake, Jr, 62 (FHL #929.273 C53d). James Blake (b. 1688) asserted that he was acquainted with the family. This explains why Sarah's brother, Edward Clapp of Dorchester, called Nicholas Clapp "brother" in his will, 3 Jan 1664/5-1 Feb 1664/5, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (o.s.) 1:442 (FHL #584127). It is highly likely that this mar occurred in Dorchester. Their 1st child was born there in 1637.

MAR #1: No mar rec found. She is called Elizabeth "Gull" in the will of her father, below. The estate records of William Gull of Hatfield include a release of debt from Nathaniel Foote to his "father" William Gull, 19 Jan 1686. See the will of William Gull, 12 Apr 1701, proved 18 Dec 1701, with agreements of heirs and other documents, Hampshire Co. Probate, 3:83, 85 (FHL #879184). Nathaniel Foote is the son of Nathaniel Foote and his wife Elizabeth, born at Wethersfield, Conn., 10 Jan 1647. Hence, it is believed that Elizabeth married (1) Nathaniel Foote and (2) William Gull. For birth of Nathaniel Foote, see "Wethersfield Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1634-1868," Barbour Collection (typescript, 1927; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 107 (FHL #002982).
MAR #2: No mar rec found. She is called Elizabeth "Gull" in the will of her father, Samuel Smith of Hadley, 23 Jun 1680, proved 29 Mar 1681, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:213-14 (FHL #879184). The will of William Gull of Hatfield, above, mentions a wife Elizabeth.

Probate, 1:213-14 (FHL #879184). This Mary Ball was apparently the wife of Samuel Ball. Samuel Ball and Mary Graves were married at Hatfield, 15 Jun 1671 ("Hampshire Records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths" [private ms of John Pynchon], entries for Hatfield, p. 48 [FHL #014766]). The settlement of estate of John Graves of Hatfield, 26 Mar 1678, mentions his dau Mary Ball (Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:196 [FHL #879184]). Hence, Samuel Smith had a dau who married John Graves. All daughters of Samuel Smith are accounted for except Mary. It is believed, therefore, that Mary Smith married John Graves about 1650 and had a dau Mary who married Samuel Ball in 1671.

MAR: No mar rec found. Philip's own will, below, mentions a wife Rebecca. A dau Rebecca Smith is identified in the will of Elizabeth Welles of Wethersfield, 28 Mar 1678, no probate act, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:379-81 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Elizabeth was the widow of Nathaniel Foote and Gov. Thomas Welles. Lt. [Philip] Smith received a portion in the division of estate. Rebecca Foote, age 10, is mentioned in the inv of estate of her father, Nathaniel Foote of Wethersfield, 20 Nov 1644 (Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:12). Hence, it is believed that Philip Smith married Rebecca, dau of Nathaniel Foote.
DEATH: "Births, Marriages, and Deaths, [Hampshire] County Court," entries for Hadley, p. 81 (FHL #760648). Also see the will of Lt. Philip Smith of Hadley, 5 Jan 1684, proved 31 Mar 1685, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:243 (FHL #879184). According to Rev.
