8251 CHR: Thornbury par reg (FHL #414766). Chr entry does not include names of parents. It is believed that two Tayer families were having children in Thornbury between 1558 and 1573. One is Thomas who had son John baptized on 15 Oct 1558. Chronological considerations suggest that William is not the son of Thomas but the son of John Tayer, who appears as a godparent during the 1560s, administrator of the estate of Joan Follet in 1576, and in Thornbury manor court rolls, searched by Clive Beardsmore of Birmingham, Eng, corr 5 Feb 1993.

8256 CHR: Thornbury par reg (FHL #414766). Names of parents are not included in chr entry. Although there is no proof that William is a son of James Lawrence, it is believed he is the son of James because John Hilpe, father-in-law of James Lawrence, was one of his godfathers, and William fits well into this family chronologically. Lawrence, William (I8956)

8257 CHR: Thornbury par reg (FHL #414766). Names of parents are not included in chr entry. John's own will, below, mentions brothers and sisters who are proved children of John and Anne Lawrence.

8260 CHR: Thornbury par reg (FHL #414766). The entry does not include names of parents. It is concluded that Joan is the dau of James Lawrence and his wife Cicely Hilpe (married Thornbury, 5 Sep 1569) for circumstantial reasons:
1. James Lawrence was godfather to Joan's son, John Tayer, in 1591.
2. John Hilpe, Sr, and John Hilpe, Jr, appear to have familial connections to the family of John Tayer in his will in 1600. Cicely Hilpe, wife of James Lawrence, is a dau of John Hilpe, per the will of Richard Hampden of Thornbury, 7 Jan 1550, proved 22 Jan 1551/2, P.C.C., 2 Powell (FHL #091926).
3. Joan Shipman, widow of John Tayer, owned land in Thornbury formerly in the tenancy of John Hilpe (Thornbury Manor Court Rolls, 28 Sep 1626, Bagot Collection, Staffordshire Record Office, D(W)1721/1/6, by corr with Clive Beardsmore, Birmingham, Eng, 5 Feb 1993).
4. Alice Hilpe, apparently the wife of John Hilpe, Sr, was godmother to Cicely, dau of Thomas and Joan (Lawrence) Tayer.

8261 CHR: Thornbury par reg (FHL #414766). The entry does not include the names of John's parents. John's mother is identified as Mary in his will, below. Mary's burial entry calls her the sister-in-law of Thomas Tayer who died in 1573, thus excluding Thomas as the father of this John. Thornbury baptismal entries suggest two Tayers were having children in the parish during the period 1558-1573 - Thomas and John. With the exclusion of Thomas, it appears that John's father is the John Tayer who was buried in 1584 and who appears in various baptismal records as a godfather, as administrator to the estate of Joan Follet in 1576, and in manorial court recs. No other Thayer has been identified in Thornbury during the period who could be the father of John.

8294 CHR: Tilbury-Juxta-Clare par reg (FHL #1472764 item 28). John was aged 45 yrs on passenger list of the ship "Elizabeth," 30 Apr 1634 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS [Baltimore, 1987], 114 [FHL #973 C2col]).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. A wife Elinor is listed with him on the ship "Elizabeth," 30 Apr 1634, above.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. The wife of John Spring of Watertown, "sometimes the wife of Thomas Hatch of Scituate," had been living in Scituate without her husband for 3 or 4 years, when the Plymouth Colony court ordered her to repair to her husband or show cause, 6 Oct 1659 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1855-61], 3:174 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). This wife was apparently the Lydia Spring mentioned in the nuncupative will of Jonas Pickles of Scituate, 15 Dec 1664 (Plymouth Colony Probate, 2:2:30 [FHL #567794]). John Spring evidently had no wife on 25 Mar 1656, when he deeded his house and lands to son Henry in exchange for perpetual support, as he made no provisions for her (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 1:220-23 [FHL #554000]). Therefore, John Spring married Lydia, widow of Thomas Hatch of Scituate, later in 1656.
DEATH: No death rec found. John was living in Watertown as late as 6 Oct 1659, when the Plymouth court ordered his wife to repair to him, above.

Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:215-16 [FHL #974.6 P2m]).
MAR: No mar rec found. She is undoubtedly the Anna Stanton whose nuncupative will was recorded, 14 Sep 1688. Notice to show cause, 16 Apr 1711, indicates she is the mother of the children of Thomas Stanton proved in other documents (New London District Probate Files, #5038 [FHL #1025050]). The will of Dorothy Lord of Hartford, above, mentions "my daughter Stanton." Although her given name is not mentioned in the will, she is evidently Thomas Stanton's wife Anna.

Richard became a wealthy tobacco planter in Westmoreland Co. The Appomattox referred to in John's letter was not the Appomattox Co. of today but a parish in Westmoreland Co. The name was changed to Washington Parish in 1664 (Mary S. Miller, PLACE-NAMES OF THE NORTHERN NECK OF VIRGINIA [Richmond, 1983], 2 [FHL #975.52 E5m]).

8300 CHR: Towcester par reg, as cited in Kenneth Lord, GENEALOGY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS LORD (New York, 1946), 2 (FHL #929.273 L884Lka).
MAR: A wife Hannah is identified in Thomas's will, below. Thomas married Hannah Thurston at Boston, 28 Sep 1652, according to Lord, GENEALOGY OF THOMAS LORD, 67. Published Boston vital recs state that it was Thomas "Love" who married Hannah Thurston on "23" Sep 1652 (BOSTON BIRTHS, BAPTISMS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS, 1630-1699, 9th Report Boston Record Commissioners [Boston, 1883], 38 [FHL #982237]). However, "Love" was probably a clerical error for Lord. There is no further record of a Thomas Love in Boston. Furthermore, Richard Thurston of Boston had business interests with two of Thomas Lord's brothers. Richard Lord and Richard Thurston were part owners of a ship in 1650 (ASPINWALL NOTARIAL RECORDS, 1644-1651, 32nd Report Boston Record Commissioners, [Boston, 1903], 323-24 [FHL #974.461 H2b]). Robert Lord and Richard Thurston both married daughters of Susannah, wife of William Philips, and widow of Christopher Stanley of Boston. See the will of Susannah Philips, 10 Sep 1650, proved 2 Aug 1655, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (o.s.) 1:105(FHL #584127). Deed of William Philips to John Jeffs, 8 Jan 1656, mentions house in Boston owned by Richard Thurston and Robert Lord before they departed into England (Suffolk Co. Deeds, 2:329-30 [FHL #974.46 R2s]). It seems highly likely that Thomas Lord married Hannah Thurston.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of Thomas Lord of Wethersfield, 28 Oct 1661, proved 29 Oct 1667, inv 5 Apr 1662, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:136-37 [FHL #974.6 P2m]).
