MAR: No mar rec found. Richard's estate recs, below, mentions a wife Sarah. The will of widow Sarah Lord of Hartford, 2 Aug 1676, proved 7 Sep 1676, makes "brother" George Graves one of the supervisors. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:216-17 (FHL #974.6 P2m). However, Kenneth Lord states that George Graves' sister Sarah was wife of a Deming (Lord, GENEALOGY, 9). Further research is necessary. George Graves was a deacon in the Hartford church and could have been referred to as brother in a religious sense.
DEATH: Elwood M. Avery, ed, "Marriage, Birth and Death Records from the Town Records of New London" (typescript, n.d.), 74 [FHL #974.65/N2 V2a]). Aged 51 yrs. Also see the adm/divison of estate of Capt. Richard Lord "of Hartford," 5 Sep 1662, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:136. This document states that Richard died on 10 May 1662. It is likely that he died in New London while conducting business, as he is called "of Hartford" in estate recs and in the will of his brother Thomas Lord, dated 28 Oct 1661. Richard was a ship owner and merchant involved in the West Indies trade.

MAR: No mar rec found. The will of Dorothy's mother, Dorothy Lord of Hartford, 8 Feb 1669, proved 14 May 1675, refers to the children of "my daughter Ingersoll" but does not mention the daughter by given name. She appears to be deceased, as her portion went to her children: Dorothy Phelps, Margery Ingersoll, Hannah Kelsey, and Margaret Ingersoll. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:215-16 (FHL #974.6 P2m). All of the daughters of Thomas and Dorothy Lord are accounted for except the youngest dau Dorothy. Margery, dau of John and Dorothy Ingersoll, was born at Northampton, Jan 1656 ("Births, Marriages, and Deaths, [Hampshire] County Court, entries for Northampton, p. 26 [FHL #760648]). Dorothy died the same month ("Hampshire Records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths," [private ms of John Pynchon], entries for Northampton, p. 155 [FHL #014766]). Furthermore, Mary, widow of John Ingersoll of Westfield, testified on 30 Sep 1684 of a pre-nuptial agreement between herself and John, which mentions John's "other children," who are not named except Dorothy, wife of Jacob Phelps (Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:238,257 [FHL #879184]). Dorothy Lord obviously married John Ingersoll of Northampton and Westfield, Mass.

MAR: No mar rec found. The will of Susanna Philips, widow of William Philips of Boston, 10 Sep 1650, proved 2 Aug 1655, gives to dau Rebecca Lord; it also mentions the house that was "my husband Stanleyes" (Suffolk Co. Probate [o.s.], 1:105 [FHL #584127]). The will of Christopher Stanley of Boston, 27 Mar 1646, proved 19 Mar 1649/50, mentions wife Susan (Suffolk Co. Probate, [o.s.] 1:57). Susannah was clearly the wife of Chistopher Stanley and second the wife of William Philips. On 18 Aug 1652 Susannah Philips, with consent of her husband William Philips, gave the house to her dau Rebecca Lord and her "sister Thirston." (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 1:325 [FHL #974.46 R2s]). On 8 Jan 1656, William Philips sold the house to John Jeffs, having received letters from Robert Lord and wife Rebecca and Richard Thurston and wife Martha, now in England, authorizing William to sell their interest in the house (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 2:329) Robert Lord's wife was obviously Rebecca, dau of Susannah (Stanley) Philips by her 1st husband Christopher Stanley.

MAR #1: No mar rec found. Deborah was identified as the wife of Walter Joy in a deposition concerning the estate her cousin, Thomas Wathen of Gloucester, Mass., 17 Sep 1652 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:148-49 [FHL #974.45 P2p]).
MAR #2: No mar rec found. Circumstantial evidence is cited in Donald Lines Jacobus, HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD, 2 vols. (Fairfield, CT, 1930,1932; repr, 2 vols in 3, Baltimore, 1976), 1:347-48 (FHL #974.69/F1 D2j). Thomas French of Guilford acquired a 2nd wife Deborah between 1660 and 1667. Thomas and Deborah had two children born at Guilford in 1667 and 1669. Thomas and Deborah deeded land in Guilford to Joseph Joy, 10 Mar 1678 and 21 Jul 1679 (Guilford Deeds, B:174, 179 [FHL #004331]). The will of Joseph Joy of Fairfield, dated 28 Apr 1690, no probate act, gives to "cousins" Walter Joy, son of "my brother Jacob Joy," Joseph Bennett, Deborah Joy, Mary Joy, and brother Jacob Joy (Fairfield, Conn. District Probate Files, #3493 [FHL #1018760]). The nuncupative will of Abraham Joy, sworn to by Isaac Wheeler, 15 Mar 1687, shows that Abraham gave his estate to his brother Joseph (Ibid, #3491). The estate recs of Isaac Joy show that he had 3 brothers and 1 sister related by father and mother and 2 children related by mother only (Jacobus, FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD, 347). The document is not found in New Haven District probate files; register books include an inv dated 11 May 1675, but there is no mention of siblings (New Haven District Probate, 1:2:59 [FHL #005294]). Jacobus apparently viewed a now-lost estate paper. The conclusion is that Isaac, Abraham, Joseph, and Jacob Joy are brothers, the sons of Walter and Deborah Joy. The 2 children related to Isaac by the mother only are the 2 children of Thomas and Deborah French.

The same children are mentioned in the will of his widow, Joan Deering of Kittery, 20 Jun 1707, proved 22 Dec 1707 (William M. Sargent, ed, MAINE WILLS, 1640-1760 [Portland, ME, 1887; repr Baltimore, 1972], 151-53 [FHL #974.1 P2s]). Joan's will also mentions her "brother" William Pepperill. These depositions also suggest that Sarah is the dau of Joan Crafts in whose house they lived and which house Sarah believed she had a right to own. Joan Crafts was the widow of Roger Deering and William Crafts. John Hicks and his brother Joseph quitclaimed their interest in the land of their late father, Dennis Hicks of Kittery, to Nathaniel Hicks, 15 Nov 1725 (YORK DEEDS, 16:100-101). Hence, Sarah Deering married Dennis Hicks.
