MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Elizabeth is identified in Benjamin's will, below.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of Benjamin Pickworth (no residence indicated), 20 Aug 1681, proved 27 Sep 1681, inv 21 Sep 1681, Ipswich, Mass. Deeds, 4:415 (FHL #873019). Benjamin's residence when he made his will is not stated. He probably lived in Virginia, as his will mentioned 3 tons of tobacco given to his wife Elizabeth. It is evident that Benjamin's family had lost contact with him and thought he was dead, as John West and John Elithorp were ordered by the Salem Court to make inquiry into the estate of Benjamin Pickworth and John Pickworth on 26 Jun 1677, both of whom were presumed dead (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. 8356 CHR: VITAL RECORDS OF SALEM, 6 vols. (Salem, MA, 1916-25), 2:176 (FHL #975.45/S1 V2e).
MAR: No mar rec found. Joseph Pickworth, his wife Abigail, and John Elithorp sued Abraham, Thomas, and Ephraim Jones in Ipswich Court, 27 Sep 1681, for withholding 27 pounds (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 8:166 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). The implication is that Abigail Pickworth and John Elithorp are heirs to an inheritance being withheld by the administrators or executors. Abigail, widow of Thomas Elithorp, married Thomas Jones. On 6 Apr 1688 she joined with son Nathaniel Elithorp and daughters Abigail Pickworth and Mary Ryley in appointing son John Elithorp attorney for business at Rowley (Charles Henry Pope, THE PIONEERS OF MASSACHUSETTS [Boston, 1900; repr Baltimore, 1991], 155 [FHL #974.4 D2p]). The original documents cited by Pope have not been found. John Elithorp was also appointed power of attorney for Joseph Pickworth to receive his portion of the estate of Joseph's brother John Pickworth, 26 Jun 1683, Essex Co. Probate, (o.s.) 2:45 (FHL #860485). It seems highly likely that Joseph Pickworth married Abigail, dau of Thomas and Abigail Elithorp.
DEATH: No death rec found. Joseph was living in Marblehead, 1 Feb 1692/3, when he sold land in Manchester, formerly belonging to his father, to John Lee (Essex Co. Deeds, 32:221-22 [FHL #866028]).

MAR: No mar rec found. She is called Rachel "Sibly" in the will of her mother, Ann Pickworth of Manchester, 10 May 1682, proved 3 Apr 1683 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 9:79-80 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). John Sibly was an heir in Ann Pickworth's estate division, 26 Jun 1683 (Ibid, 9:79). Moreover, John Sibly is called "brother" in the will of Benjamin Pickworth, 20 Aug 1681, proved 27 Sep 1681, Ipswich, Mass. Deeds, 4:415 (FHL #873019). John and Rachel Sibly had children born in Manchester in 1675 and 1677 (VITAL RECORDS OF MANCHESTER [Salem, MA, 1903], 110 [FHL #974.45/M3 V28v]).

8363 CHR: VITAL RECORDS OF WEST SPRINGFIELD, 2 vols. (Boston, 1944-45), 1:202 (FHL #974.426/W1 V2n). For discussion of Norman's birth year and order of birth in family, see burial, below.
DEATH: Ibid, 2:286. This is a copy of the cem inscription.
BUR: Mrs. Seth Ames Lewis, comp, "Cemetery Inscriptions West Springfield" (typescript, n.d.), 108 (FHL #974.426/W1 V22l). This inscription indicates Norman was aged 22 yrs at death, which gives him an approximate birth year of 1801. However, there is insufficient time for another child to have been born between siblings Justus and Mercy. The will and division of estate of Jonathan Smith, Noadiah Smith's brother, lists Norman as the last child of Noadiah Smith, deceased, in a list that shows all of the other children in exact birth order. (See the will of Jonathan Smith of West Springfield, 3 Feb 1820, proved 13 Apr 1820, inv 9 May 1820, division 29 June 1820, Hampden Co. Probate Files, #10355 [FHL #1547728]). Hence, it is believed that the age on Norman's gravestone inscription is incorrect, or it was incorrectly copied.

MAR #1: No mar rec found. "Mary the wife of Obadiah Hawes" died at Dorchester, 21 Apr 1676 (DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 21st Report Boston Record Commissioners [Boston, 1890], 28 [FHL #974.46/D1 V2r]). The will of James Humphrey of Dorchester, 16 Dec 1685, proved 20 Apr 1724, gave to his son-in-law Obadiah Hawes and his children (Suffolk Co. Probate, #4893, [o.s.] 23:202 [FHL #584136]). In this case "son-in-law" must be taken literally, rather than the oft-used meaning for step-son. Richard Hawes appears to have had no surviving wife.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. The colony records show that on 7 Oct 1678 Obadiah Homes [Hawes] was the husband of John Holmes's widow (Nathaniel B. It is generally assumed that Ann is a sister of Elizabeth and Simon Lobdell (proved children of Nicholas Lobdell), who also lived in Springfield, because of the rarity of the name and same location. Ann's estimated age suggests that she is the child chr at Northam in 1634/5. 8380 CHR: W. Watts, ed, "Watford Parish Register" (transcript, n.d.; Northamptonshire Record Office), 15, courtesy of Sidnee D. Spencer, Murray, UT, 1994.
MAR: William Bradford wrote that the rest of Thomas Rogers's family came after their father, married, and had many children. He does not identify the children or their spouses. However, Samuel Eddy, whose wife was named Elizabeth, is found on a list of "first born children," dated 3 Jun 1662, who received land grants. Samuel did not qualify as a "first born" child of the colony, which seems to mean any needy child (or parent for the child) of those who were in Plymouth by 1627. Therefore, Samuel probably qualified by right of his wife, apparently a daughter of one of the original Plymouth settlers. Investigation by Eugene A. Stratton has found only one unaccounted for daughter of the original settlers named Elizabeth - the daughter of Thomas Rogers. For further discussion, see Stratton, PLYMOUTH COLONY ITS HISTORY & AND PEOPLE (Salt Lake City, UT, 1986), 287-88 (#974.4 H2s). Further evidence would be desirable.
