- BIRTH: The existence of a son Philip is problematic. While it is possible that Philip is identical to the older Philip born on 19 Dec 1657, the order in which the sons are listed in the settlement of the estate of his father, Philip Watson-Challis of Amesbury, 27 Sep 1681, suggests he was born between William (1663) and Thomas (1673). See THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. (Salem, MA, 1916-20), 3:418-19 (FHL #974.45 P2p). The will of Philip's grandfather, William Sargent of Amesbury, 24 March 1670/1, proved 13 Apr 1675, appears to name the children of Philip Watson-Challis in birth order. Philip is listed after Mary, who was born in 1668 (Ibid, 2:438-40). Hence, it is most probable that Philip was born in Amesbury between 1668 and 1670/1.
