- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John Hillman deposed, aged about 47 yrs, on 6 Sep 1698 in the case of Simon Athearn v. Praying Indians, Suffolk Co. Court Files, #4714 (FHL #910808). Copy of this deposition is found in file #4974 (FHL #910811). John is referred to as "an Englishman" in the complaint by Athearn, 1 Oct 1685 (File #4714).
MAR: No mar rec found. John called Samuel Cottle "brother" in a deposition of 6 Sep 1698 (Suffolk Co. Court Files, #4714). John was presumably married to Samuel's sister, a dau of Edward Cottle. No contemporary document has been found to identify her given name. She is called Hannah Cottle in Charles Edward Banks, HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, 3 vols. (Boston, 1911-25; repr Edgartown, MA, 1966), 3:195 (FHL #974.494 H2b).
DEATH: No death rec found. John was presumably living on 21 Apr 1728 when his son died as John Hillman, "Jr."
OCC: Weaver, yeoman.
NOTE: There is a tradition that John Hillman was "shanghaied" from a fishing boat in the Thames River and taken to New England at the age of 16. See Banks, HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, 2:30.
