Although West Springfield did not exist until 1774, the 1st Congregational Church of West Springfield, then the 2nd parish of Springfield, kept records from 1719, which are included in the published vital recs of West Springfield. The death no doubt occurred in what is now West Springfield.

In this document Benjamin Smith of Westfield states that he was formerly of Farmington, Connecticut and that he is a brother of Jonathan Smith and Jobanna Smith. This leaves no doubt as to the origin and identity of Benjamin Smith. See Farmington Deeds, 3:217 (FHL #004216).
