MAR: "Pomfret Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1705-1850," Barbour Collection (typescript, 1921; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 131 (FHL #002977). This document calls the wife "Mrs. Sarah Pierson." The name is interpreted "Mrs. Sarah Payson" in Horace E. Mather, LINEAGE OF REV. RICHARD MATHER (Hartford, 1890), 76 (FHL #186133 item 2). As the name Pierson is extremely rare in New England, and Pomfret was the home of many Payson families, Mather's interpretation is tentatively presumed correct. It is not known if the title "Mrs." indicates a previous mar or whether it was a term of respect often bestowed on women of stature in the community.
DEATH: Mather, LINEAGE OF REV. RICHARD MATHER, 76. No documentation for this death has been found, nor has any probate rec been found for Thomas, although Mather states that he left a will.
