- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Nathaniel is identified in the will of his father, Rev. Richard Mather of Dorchester, 16 Oct 1661, proved 24 May 1669, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (n.s.) 6:30 (FHL #584128). It is stated that Nathaniel was born in Liverpool on 20 Mar 1630 in Horace E. Mather, LINEAGE OF REV. RICHARD MATHER (Hartford, 1890), 55 (FHL #186133 item 2). However, it is more likely that he was born in the nearby village of Much Woolton in the parish of Childwall. It is stated that Richard removed to Much Woolton after his mar in 1624 in THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE REVEREND MAN OF GOD, MR. RICHARD MATHER (Cambridge, MA, 1670; repr, Dorchester, MA, 1850), 50 (FHL #1425681 item 2). This work was published under the sanction of Increase Mather, Nathaniel's brother, although professedly not written by him. Furthermore, Nathaniel's nephew, Rev. Cotton Mather wrote in 1702 that Samuel Mather, Timothy's brother, was born in Much Woolton in 1626 (Cotton Mather, MAGNALIA CHRISTI AMERICANA, 2 vols. [London, 1702; repr Hartford, 1853], 2:39 [FHL #1688545]).
MAR: No mar rec found. Nathaniel's wife is identified as Maria Benn in Mather, LINEAGE OF RICHARD MATHER, 55. They probably married in England. In a letter to his brother Increase Mather, dated 2 Mar 1680/1, Nathaniel refers to "my father Ben," apparently Rev. William Benn ("Mather Papers," COLLECTIONS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 4th series, 8[1868]:28-31 [FHL #1320592 item 3]).
