    • BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Increase is identified in the will of his father, Rev Richard Mather of Dorchester, 16 Oct 1661, proved 24 May 1669, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (n.s.) 6:30 (FHL #584128). Date of birth is given in Horace E. Mather, LINEAGE OF REV. RICHARD MATHER (Hartford, 1890), 61 (FHL #186133 item 2).
      CHR: RECORDS OF THE FIRST CHURCH AT DORCHESTER IN NEW ENGLAND (Boston, 1891), 151 (FHL #833385).
      MAR #1: Date of mar is from Increase Mather's Bible, quoted in Mather, LINEAGE OF RICHARD MATHER, 61. The entry does not mention the name of his wife, but she is seen in Boston vital recs with the name of Maria. The will of Sarah Mather of Boston, 3 May 1670, proved 19 Jul 1676, widow of John Cotton and Richard Mather, mentions her dau Maria Mather, child of Rev. John Cotton, no doubt the wife of Increase Mather (Suffolk Co. Probate, #806, [n.s.] 6:153-54 [FHL #581128]).
      MAR #2: BOSTON MARRIAGES FROM 1700 TO 1751, 28th Report Boston Record Commissioners (Boston, 1898; repr Baltimore, 1977), 94 (FHL #974.461 V2b).
      Wife is called "Mrs. Anne Cotton of Brooklyn." She was the widow of Rev. John Cotton and dau of Thomas Lake. The private records of Rev. John Cotton show that he married Anna Lake on 17 Aug 1686 ("Record of the Rev. John Cotton of Hampton, N.H.," NEHGR, 34[1880]:310 [FHL #974 B2ne]). Rev. John Cotton of Hampton was dead by 6 Apr 1710 when his widow Ann administered the estate. By 2 May 1715 Ann Cotton was living in Brookline, Mass., when she was bonded to distribute the estate of her late husband (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 9 vols., repr of New Hampshire State Papers Series, vols. 31-39 [Bowie, MD, 1989-90], 1:656 (FHL #974.2 P2p).
      DEATH: Date of death is from gravestone inscription, below. Also see will of Increase Mather of Boston, 7 Jun 1718, proved 23 Sep 1723, Suffolk Co. Probate, #4791, (n.s.) 12:177 (FHL #594177). Death date of "23" Aug 1723 is found in Mather, LINEAGE OF RICHARD MATHER.
