- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John is identified in the will of his father Rowland Stebbins of Northampton, 1 Mar 1669/70, proved 26 Mar 1672, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:136-37 (FHL #879184). Birth year is calculated from age 8 on the passenger list of the ship "Francis" of Ipswich, 30 Apr 1634. See Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 (Baltimore, 1987), 114 (FHL #973 W2col). John's birth in Bocking is suggested by the marriage of his parents there in 1618 and the bur of his sister Elizabeth at Bocking in 1625. Chr recs in the fragmentary par regs of Bocking are lost for the period 1606-1654.
MAR #1: Springfield Vital Records, 1:13 (FHL #185414). On this entry the wife's surname is obscured by a torn page. Her given name was Anne, and she is called "widow." She is called Anne Munden, widow of Abraham Munden of Springfield, in Thomas B. Warren, "Springfield Families" (typescript, 1935; Conn. Valley Historical Museum, Springfield, Mass.), 636 (FHL #014787). This is probably correct, as Rowland Stebbins, father of John, gave 10 shillings to Mary Munde [Munden] in his will, above. Mary is the dau of Abraham and Anne Munden; hence, Mary appears to be John's stepdaughter. Abraham Munden and Anne Munson were married at Springfield, 16 May 1644, and he died, "drowned in ye great river at ye falls," 29 Oct 1645 (Springfield Vital Records, 1:13, 45 [FHL #185414]).
