- BIRTH: "Barnstable, Mass. Vital Records," MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT, 11(1909):96 (FHL #974.4 D25md). The birth is also recorded in Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. (Boston, 1855-61), 8:46 (FHL #974.4 N2n). Both of these recs give Martha's birth year as 1640. However, her baptism was recorded as 2 Nov 1639 (see below). As the church rec was kept current, and the birth recs were often set down many years later, it is believed that the correct birth year is 1639.

MAR: "Barnstable, Mass. Vital Records," MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT, 11(1909):130. Husband is called John "Martin" on mar rec in RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 8:47. According Charles E. Banks, John "Manter" and his wife Martha settled at Tisbury (Banks, HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, 3 vols. [Boston, 1911-25; repr Edgartown, MA, 1966], 2:56 [FHL #974.494 H2b]).
DEATH: No death rec found. Banks incorrectly states that she died at Tisbury on 3 Oct 1724 (HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, 2:56). This death is for "Hannah," wife of John Manter (VITAL RECORDS OF TISBURY [Boston, 1910], 230 [FHL #974.494/T1 V28v]). Martha is not mentioned in the will of John Manter of Tisbury, 12 Sep 1698, proved 25 May 1708, Dukes Co. Probate, 1:20 (FHL #911747).
