- BIRTH: No birth rec found, but she is without doubt a dau of Thomas Holcombe, as no other Holcombe families resided in Windsor or elsewhere in New England. Mary lived in Windsor, where Thomas Holcombe settled, and George Griswold, husband of Mary Holcombe, made a claim to part of Thomas Holcombe's estate. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:129-30 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Mary's date and place of birth are approximations. She was probably born in Dorchester, where Thomas Holcombe first appears on the list of freeman, 14 May 1634 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 1:369 [FHL #974.4 N2s]). Thomas Holcombe's presence in Dorchester can also be documented on 1 Dec 1634 and 12 Aug 1635 (DORCHESTER TOWN RECORDS, 4th Report Boston Record Commissioners [Boston, 1883] 9,12 [FHL #974.46/D1 N2d]).
