Notes |
- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Matthew's birth is proved by the deposition of John Griswold and George Griswold, sons of George, and grandsons of Edward Griswold, the immigrant, Matthew's brother, dated 19 Jan 1737/8, in which it is stated that their grandfather Edward was the eldest of three brothers. The other brothers were Matthew and Thomas. Thomas was the youngest (Edward E. Salisbury and Evelyn McCurdy Salisbury, FAMILY HISTORIES AND GENEALOGIES, 3 vols. [Privately printed, 1892], 2:5 [FHL #873825]). Matthew testified in 1684 that he was about 64 years old (Connecticut Archives, "Private Controversies," 2:204, cited in Salisbury, FAMILY HISTORIES, 2:3). Hence, Matthew was born after the death of the first wife, and Thomas was younger still. The deposition of George Griswold, nephew of Matthew, dated 9 May 1700, states that as a youth he lived in Kenilworth, Warws with his father Edward Griswold in a house which belonged to his uncle Matthew Griswold (Matthew Griswold estate papers, New London District Probate Files, #2333 [FHL #1025021]).
MAR: No mar rec found in original source records. Mar date of 10 Oct 1646 is found in Henry R. Stiles, THE HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR, 2 vols. (Hartford, 1891-92), 2:800 [FHL #974.62/W1 H2s]). The mar is proved by a deed of gift from Matthew and Anna Griswold of Lyme, Conn. to their granddaughters Sarah and Anna Colton of Springfield, 3 Jun 1696, for land "which fell to us by ye decease & gift of Mr. Christopher Wolcot" (Windsor Deeds, 2:50 [FHL #006189]). This was no doubt the land bequeathed by Christopher Wolcott of Windsor to his siblings in his nuncupative will, exhibited 4 Dec 1662, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:166 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Christopher is the son of Henry Wolcott of Windsor. See the will of Henry Wolcott, 13 May 1655, proved 4 Oct 1655 (Ibid, 1:167-68). The will of Elizabeth Wolcott of Windsor, widow of Henry Wolcott, 5 Jul 1655, proved 4 Oct 1655 mentions a dau Anne (Ibid, 1:66). Hence, Anna, wife of Matthew Griswold, is a sister of Christopher and dau of Henry and Elizabeth Wolcott.
DEATH: No death rec found in original sources. For death date see Esther G. French and Robert Lewis French, THE GRISWOLD FAMILY (Wethersield, CT, 1990), 186 [FHL #929.273 G889fe]). Also see the adm of estate of Matthew Griswold of Lyme, 2 Jan 1698/9, with distributions, accts, and depositions, New London District Probate Files, #2333 (FHL #1025021).
