- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John administered the estate of Ralph Tomkins of Salem, 27 Nov 1666, although the rec does not state his relationship to Ralph (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:75-76 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). However, John is called "brother" in the will of Samuel Tomkins of Bridgewater, Mass., 20 May 1673, proved 7 Nov 1695, Plymouth Co. Probate, 1:228-29 (FHL #550708). Samuel is a proved son of Ralph Tomkins. John was probably born in 1609 for which year there are no BTs for Wendover.

Wife Mary Read was probably the widow of Thomas Read, who died in Salem before Jun 1670, when the court ordered John Tomkins and others to lay out her thirds (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 4:266 [FHL #974.45 P2e]).
