- BIRTH: He is probably the John Hilpe, Jr, mentioned with John Hilpe, Sr, in the will of John Tayer of Thornbury, 1600, proved 19 Mar 1600/1, Consistory Court of Gloucester, orig wills, 1600, #86 (FHL #091387). Thus, he is very likely the son of John Hilpe, Sr. Date and place of birth are approximations. John matriculated from Magdalen Hall, Oxford University in 1579, age 16 (Joseph Foster, ALUMNI OXONIENSES, 4 vols. [Oxford, 1891-92], 1:715 [FHL #942.57/D1 J2ox]).
MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Alice is mentioned in a deed to William Peters in 1604 ("Pedes Finium or Excerpts from the Feet of Fines in the County of Gloucester," TRANSACTIONS OF THE BRISTOL AND GLOUCESTERSHIRE ARCHAELOGICAL SOCIETY FOR 1892-93, 17 [1893?]:214 [FHL #1426044]).
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. John was living in Thornbury in 1608 when he was registered as fit for military duty and furnished the militia with two "corslets" [suits of armor] (John Smith, MEN & ARMOUR OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE IN 1608 [1902; repr Gloucester, 1980], 224 [FHL #942.41 M2s]).
