Notes |
- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Mary is identified as a dau of widow Mary Pond of Dorchester, now the wife of Edward Shephard of Cambridge, in an undated Cambridge church rec (Stephen Paschall Sharples, RECORDS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND, 1632-1830 [Boston, 1906], 7 [FHL #974.44/C1 V27s]). Although undated, the document is of early origin. Edward Shephard and Mary Pond were married abt 1648-50. Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. Robert Pond of Dorchester, deceased, is called father-in-law of John Blackman of Dorchester in a deed from Edward Shephard of Cambridge to John Blackman, 24 Feb 1650/1 (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 3:72 [FHL #493932]). John Blackman apparently married a dau of Robert Pond. Mary is the only known dau of Robert Pond old enough to have been married in 1650/1, although there may have been other children not identified. By 1659 John Blackman's wife was Sarah (RECORDS OF THE FIRST CHURCH AT DORCHESTER [Boston, 1891], 21 [orig p.32] [FHL #974.46/D1 K2r]). And they appear to have been married as early as 10 Aug 1656, when John Blackman had a son John (DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARIAGES, AND DEATHS [Boston, 1890], 4 [FHL #974.46/D1 V2r]). However, Robert Pond's dau Sarah could not have been the wife of John Balckman in 1650/1, as she was a single woman in 1657 (Suffolk Co. Probate, #172, [n.s.] 2:513-14 [FHL #594359]). The most likely explanation is that John Blackman married Mary Pond, who died between 1650/1 and 1656. There are, of course, other possibilities.
