Notes	BIRTH: No birth rec found. Joseph and his sister Sarah were baptized in the Salem 1st Church on 3 Sep 1648, but no parents names are mentioned. Joseph is listed as the yougest son on the petition to settle the estate of his late father, William Towne of Salem, 17 Jan 1682/3 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:358 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). Joseph deposed in Jun 1660 that he was about 21 yrs old (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:205 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). He was probably born in Salem, where the family settled after leaving Gt. Yarmouth, Norfolk. Joseph's baptism is not found in Gt. Yarmouth par reg with his elder siblings. CHR: VITAL RECORDS OF SALEM, 6 vols. (Salem, MA, 1916-25), 2:355 (FHL #974.45/S1 V2e). Parents are not identified in this document. MAR: No mar rec found. See deed from William and Joanna Towne of Topsfield to their son Joseph, "in consideration of a contract...of marriage betweene our sayd sonn Joseph Towne and Phebe Perkings, the daughter of Thomas Perkings of the same town," 31 Mar 1663 (Ipswich, Mass. Deeds, 2:156 [FHL #873018]). The will of Thomas Perkins of Topsfield, 11 Dec 1684, proved 11 Sep 1686, calls Joseph Towne "son" (Suffolk Co. Probate, #1484, [o.s.] 11:22-25 [FHL #584130]).
