    MAR: No mar rec found. See pre-nuptial agreement, 15 Dec 1647 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:126 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). The document shows that Sarah was the widow of Luke Heard and dau of John Wyatt. Wyatt was actually her stepfather.

    BIRTH: No birth rec found. Benjamin is identified in the will of his father, Joseph Bixby of Boxford, 11 Nov 1699, proved 6 Mar 1703/4, Essex Co. Probate, (o.s.) 308:170 (FHL #875125). Date of birth is an approximation. The family of Joseph Bixby lived in Ipswich from 1647 to 1661, when they moved to Rowley Village, now Boxford. It is highly likely that Benjamin was born at Ipswich.
    MAR: Mar rec not found. Some of the children of Benjamin Bixby and his wife Mary were born in Topsfield, 1689-1702.
    DEATH: No death rec found. However, Benjamin signed a deed on 5 Mar 1726/7, which the witnesses testified on 11 Jul 1727 was signed by Benjamin Bixby, "late of Topsfield deceased." Hence, Benjamin died between Mar and Jul 1727.

    NOTE: It has been published that Benjamin probably had two wives named Mary. See Willard Goldwaite Bixby, THE GENEALOGY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH BIXBY (New York, 1914), 35-36 (FHL #1035524). However, the argument that a gap of nearly ten years existed between children is probably invalid, as the dau Mary was probably not the one baptized in 1707. A much older child who was likely born in the supposed gap. Joshua also fits into the supposed gap.

    DEATH: Entry in diary of Rev. Marston Cabot of Thompson states that Benjamin died in early Dec 1744. The diary is cited in Ellen D. Larned, "Thompson, Connecticut First Families," 13 (FHL #015585). This work appears to be a scrapbook of articles published serially in a newspaper. Thompson was created by a division of Killingly in 1785.

    BIRTH: No birth rec found. Mary is identified in a deed from Benjamin Bixby of Topsfield to his son Nathan Bixby, 2 Nov 1722 (Essex Co. Deeds, 43:241 [FHL #866033]). It is possible that Mary is the dau baptized at Topsfield in May 1707, but the above deed places her before her sisters in a list of the three surviving daughters of Benjamin. Therefore, it is believed that Mary was the eldest daughter. Date and place of birth are approximations. The Mary Bixby baptized in 1707 probably belonged to Benjamin Bixby, Jr, who married abt 1703.

    Notes:

    BIRTH: No birth rec found. No proof is found that Joshua is a son of Benjamin Bixby, although it seems very probable. He is placed in this family in Willard Goldwaite Bixby, A GENEALOGY OF THE DESCENDANTS OFJOSEPH BIXBY (New York, 1914), 37 (FHL #1035524). Considering that Joshua died in Topsfield in 1754, "an aged man," it is difficult to fit him into any of the other families in the area. The children of Benjamin's brothers are well accounted for. Moreover, George Bixby, another son of Benjamin, was surety for the widow's adm of Joshua Bixby's estate, below. Date and place of birth are approximations.

Supporting this identification is the marriage of Archelaus Towne (grandson of Joseph Towne) to Susannah Foster (niece of Aaron Foster), intentions filed at Dudley on 4 Nov 1796 (VITAL RECORDS OF DUDLEY, [Worcester, MA, 1908], 173[FHL #974.43/D2 V2s]). Furthermore, Timothy Foster, Aaron's brother, as well as Timothy's sons, Abel and Silas, owned land in Thompson, Conn. near where the Towne's lived (Thompson was the north parish of Killingly until 1785). See Thompson Deeds, 4:14 (FHL #005829); 5:261 (FHL #005230). No other Towne family has been found in Killingly into which Sarah could be placed. Date and place of birth are approximations.
