Bixby, Thomas

Notes:

BIRTH: No proof has been found that Thomas is the son of Nicholas Bixby. However, it is most probable. The will of Thomas Bixby, below, gives to his son John the tenament "Queynts." This is no doubt the tenement in Thorp Morieux purchased in Oct 1427 by Walter Bixby, John Leverych, and William Queynt (Feet of Fines, quoted in full in John B. Threlfall, "The English Ancestry of Joseph Bixby of Ipswich and Boxbord, Massachusetts," NEHGR, 141[1987]:230-31 [FHL #974 B2ne]). This Walter is believed to be the grandfather of Thomas. Walter had 2 sons, Robert and Nicholas. According to Threlfall, who has studied the Bixbys of Thorp Morieux in detail, "Nicholas was the probable ancestor of the New England colonist, Joseph Bixby. The reasoning is that Nicholas was used as a given name by Thomas of Tostock and his descendants, from whom descended Joseph, but does not appear to have been used by Robert, who died in 1524, nor any of his descendants" (Ibid, 141:229).
MAR #1: No evidence of this wife has been found, but the 2nd wife, Margaret, mentioned in Thomas's will, below, was "to have all such goods as she had of her own..." This is a clear indication that Margaret was a second wife and not the mother of the children. Date and place of birth are approximations.
